Patriots host USFL standout running back for free agent workout

Through the first week and a half of Patriots training camp, the team’s lack of running back depth has been noticeable. With Ty Montgomery getting hurt on Day 2 and not practicing since, and Rhamondre Stevenson limited for most of the summer, the reps for all three units of the offense have been divided between Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris, and J.J. Taylor.
Practice reps aren’t the be-all-end-all, but especially at a position that deals with as many injuries as running back it’s not hard to look at that lack of depth and project it forwards to the season. The thin depth suggests the team could stand to add another back, and they seem to agree. They’ve spent the last few weeks hosting some of the top running back free agents including Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott, as well as others. They were also briefly connected to Dalvin Cook.

On Thursday the Patriots added another name to that list. According to #Patriots working out two-time @USFLStallions champion running back C.J. Marable per a league source @KPRC2

Marable, 26, has spent the last two seasons with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, who won the league title both years. In 10 games last year he rushed for 525 yards – the fourth-most in the league – on 118 carries. He also caught 28 passes for 235 yards, and scored five total touchdowns.
Prior to his time in the USFL, the 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back was with the Chicago Bears as a UDFA for the spring and summer of 2021 before being released as part of final roster cuts. He played his college ball at Coastal Carolina, where he was First-team All-Sun Belt in 2020.
If the Patriots want to sign Marable, they do have an open roster spot to do so. The team opened that spot on Wednesday by releasing UDFA wide receiver Ed Lee.

Patriots training camp notebook: Quarterbacks and rookies highlight Day 7
After a day out of pads on Tuesday, the New England Patriots returned to the field on Wednesday for what was their most intense training camp practice of the summer to this point. Back in full pads the practice schedule included a little bit of everything, with the team working on the passing game as well as the running game, with both goal line and full field periods.
In a practice that certainly seems to be geared more towards ‘evaluation’ than ‘installation’ the steady progress the offense has made through the first week of camp. That was highlighted by the play of the quarterbacks, who will get us started as we take a closer look at Day 7…
Quarterbacks heating up

This was the second padded practice of the summer, but the first one on Monday focused heavily on the run game. That made Wednesday’s passing sessions the most competitive of the summer so far, and all three quarterbacks thrived.
Mac Jones was 13-of-15 in competitive drills. Moreso in this practice than any other he tested tight windows and more intermediate and deep routes.
One standout moment from Jones came early in practice in 11-on-11 full field work. Pressured by Jahlani Tavai, Jones rolled out to his right. Throwing on the run, he connected with rookie wide receiver Kayshon Boutte for a first down.
Jones then made some of his best throws late in practice, connecting for touchdowns with DeVante Parker and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Those two reps in particular stand out because they were on timing concepts (a back-shoulder for Parker, and a quick-hitting in route for Smith-Schuster). Timing means chemistry and to see Jones show that level of chemistry with his top receivers – especially Smith-Schuster, who he’s been on the field with only a handful of times – is encouraging.
