Leonard Fournette wasn’t the only running back meeting with the Patriots on Wednesday

With a week to go until their first training camp practice, the Patriots appear to be busy filling out the final two open spots on their 90-man roster. Wednesday saw them focusing heavily on the running back position.
The big news of the day was the team hosting 2017 first-round pick Leonard Fournette for a workout. However, Fournette was not the only free agent running back to visit Foxborough on Wednesday. According to multiple reports, the Patriots also hosted 25-year-old Darrell Henderson for a workout.
Henderson was a third-round pick of the Rams in 2019 out of Memphis. The 5-foot-8, 208-pound back had a career-year for LA in 2021 when he ran for 668 yards and five touchdowns and caught another 29 passes for 176 yards and three scores in 12 games.
Last year, Henderson went into the season as the Rams’ starting running back. However, he was waived late in the 2022 season. The Jaguars claimed him off waivers but he never played a game for Jacksonville, and was released in late December. He’s been unsigned since, and wasn’t with a team for spring practices.

It would be surprising to see the Patriots add Fournette, Henderson, or another veteran running back before the start of the season. James Robinson originally figured to be in that role but he was released during the spring with an injury designation. After starter Rhamondre Stevenson the Patriots’ running back room is relatively inexperienced with J.J. Taylor having played 12 total games over three NFL seasons and second-year backs Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris combining for 28 total carries last season.
The Patriots will begin their 2023 training camp next week, with the first practice being held on Wednesday at Gillette Stadium. All practices are free and open to the public.

Should the Patriots target Dalvin Cook, now that they lost out on DeAndre Hopkins?
The New England Patriots continue to be involved in rumors around free-agent running back Dalvin Cook, but that doesn’t mean they will actually take the plunge and sign him. Or should they?
New England is officially out of the DeAndre Hopkins sweepstakes, but could still use a potential impact player at an affordable price. Does that mean Bill Belichick might take a shot on Cook, instead?

There’s a list of factors to consider in the Patriots’ potential pursuit of Cook in free agency…
Dalvin Cook’s On-Field Impact

Despite being 27 years old with more than 1,500 career touches, Cook remained one of the more explosive and productive backs in football in 2022. He remains a true home-run hitter, as he broke his own career-best long touchdown run with an 81-yard scamper against the Bills. He was one of only six backs in the league with at least three runs of 40-plus yards.
On top of that, there are advanced metrics that point to a back that can still break off big runs with his explosiveness. According to Next Gen Stats, Cook was the third-fastest running back in the league based on literal miles per hour (21.7 mph average). Only the Seahawks’ Kenneth Walker and the Jets’ Breece Hall were faster.
The Patriots have a strong running back group overall, and not necessarily just a one-headed monster with Rhamondre Stevenson. But Cook would add a level of big-play ability that they may not necessarily have. There’s an urgency for the first couple of guys to tackle Cook every time he touches the ball. That’s real impact.
