Patriots host two veteran free agents for workouts
Even with their record-setting spending spree and the 2021 NFL Draft behind them, the work is still not done for Bill Belichick and the Patriots, as the team continues to scour the free agent market for potential fits.
And on Thursday, that search led to workouts for veteran cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and offensive lineman Alex Redmond.
A 31-year-old, Kirkpatrick’s visit to Foxborough comes on the heels of a 2020 campaign that included 56 total tackles (his second-highest single season total) and a career-high three interceptions in 14 games with the Cardinals.
A first-round pick of the Bengals in 2012 following a collegiate career with the Alabama Crimson Tide, perhaps it’s only natural that the Patriots are showing an apparent interest in Kirkpatrick. But Kirkpatrick could also represent an option on the outside with Jason McCourty officially departing the Patriots for Miami earlier this month.
The 6-foot-2 Kirkpatrick has totaled 344 tackles, 13 interceptions, and 74 passes defended in 113 games between the Bengals and Cards.
Redmond, meanwhile, made the trek to Patriot Place after spending the last four years with the Bengals. A 6-foot-5, 320-pound lineman guard, Redmond appeared in nine games (seven starts) in 2020, and has started 24 of his 27 appearances since the start of the 2018 season. Injuries are a slight concern with Redmond, as he dealt with concussion issues last year, and missed additional time during a biceps tear suffered during the 2019 season.
The Patriots’ depth chart at guard currently includes Isaiah Wynn, Shaq Mason, and Justin Herron.
