Jerod Mayo shares his initial impression of working with Drake Maye
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo says rookie quarterback Drake Maye “has a lot to work on” but it putting the work in.
Over the weekend, the New England Patriots held two rookie minicamp practices. Friday’s practice was held behind closed doors, while Saturday’s was open to the media.
This weekend represented the first time this new coaching staff has gotten to work directly with their draft picks in a practice setting. For both sides, it was a chance to make first impressions.

Leading that rookie class is quarterback and third overall pick Drake Maye. Maye is tasked with kicking off the tenures of head coach Jerod Mayo and EVP of player personnel Eliot Wolf on the right foot.
Prior to Saturday’s practice, Mayo was asked his first impressions of Maye. “Look, he has a lot to work on,” Mayo said. “But I have no doubt that he will put the time in. You didn’t see him out here yesterday, but he was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else.”
That work includes things on and off the field. After practice Maye was asked what has him staying late at the facility.
“As a quarterback, you’ve gotta know what everybody’s doing on the field on the offense. You’ve gotta know all 11 [assignments],” he explained. “It’s my job. That takes extra time and takes – extra drawing up, extra questions.”
Taking charge of Maye’s development is offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt. Mayo called Van Pelt “that lead guy” when asked who will be the primary person in Maye’s ear as the season goes on.
“There has to be balance there, you don’t want Drake hearing too many voices,” Mayo explained. “Once again, that’s why I’m saying that AVP (Alex Van Pelt) will be the lead guy as far as that communication with Drake.”
