The Patriots roster is back down to four quarterbacks
Coming out of the 2024 NFL Draft, one of the more immediate questions was how the New England Patriots roster would shake out at the quarterback position. After drafting Drake Maye in the first round and Joe Milton in the sixth, the team had five quarterbacks signed with the rookies joining veterans Jacoby Brissett, Bailey Zappe, and Nathan Rourke. With two rookies in needs of snaps in spring practices and training camp, that’s a crowded room.
On Monday morning the Patriots made a move to make more room for the young quarterbacks. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the team informed Rourke he is being waived, leaving four quarterbacks on the Patriots roster.

Rourke, 25, was claimed off waivers by the Patriots late last season after spending most of the year with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He didn’t appear in any games, but was re-signed to a one-year, minimum money deal back in March.
Prior to making the jump to the NFL last year, Rourke spent two seasons in the CFL. The Victoria, BC native won the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 2022 while playing for the BC Lions.
After releasing Rourke, the Patriots roster is now at 89 players. There is room for one more addition before OTAs begin on May 20.
As OTAs begin, the question becomes about quarterback roster spots heading into spring practices and training camp. The team most likely won’t carry four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. With Brissett expected to start and/or play a mentor role to Maye that leaves one potential spot between Zappe and Milton.
