Kristaps Porzingis injury not as severe as feared for Celtics, according to John Karalis
During this morning’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Boston Sports Journal’s John Karalis discussed Kristaps Porzingis’ leg injury during last night’s Game 4 victory. Karalis mentioned that Porzingis appeared to have his foot stepped on and may have tweaked his leg, initially raising concerns of a ruptured Achilles. However, further examination suggested it was not a major injury, possibly a calf strain, which could sideline Porzingis for a few weeks rather than months or the entire season.

TRANSCRIPT:
Fred Toucher: Porzingis appeared to have his foot stepped on by Herro, didn’t he? He tweaked his leg, and it looked like he might have ruptured his Achilles. He seemed upset when he came off the floor. Is the news not that bad? What are you hearing?
John Karalis: I heard that. I mean, first of all, it’s just going to be like the imaging today that they’re going to do. They’re going to figure it out. But, the same thing that you’re hearing is that they avoided a major injury. The thing about an Achilles injury is that you can tell right away if it’s major or not; you might not be able to tell the severity of a lesser injury. But if it’s, you know, the difference between a calf strain and an Achilles thing, it could be minor. And they’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened. But if it was a ruptured Achilles, I mean, you’d have very obvious signs that they’d be able to confirm.
Fred Toucher: Like with Aaron Rodgers, as soon as he went down, you could feel it.
John Karalis: You could feel it. You could even see it.
Fred Toucher: Right. Like if you look at the replay of the Rodgers injury, you can see his Achilles give out. Yeah, you could see it kind of roll up like a window blind.
John Karalis: Yeah, that’s right, that’s right. That’s the effect. Exactly. So the good news is that it’s not that serious. So now we’re talking about a matter of weeks, not months or the whole season. If it’s just a calf strain and it’s, you know, grade two or something like that, we’re looking at potentially 3 to 6 weeks. And the Celtics have been careful with Porzingis, so if it’s the most extreme of a calf thing, he could be back by the beginning of the NBA finals.
