TRANSCRIPT:
Fred Toucher: The Patriots were trying to make a trade, back into the first round. According to your reporting. Can you give us some intel on that?
Mike Reiss: Thursday night, before the draft started, let me take you down to Gillette Stadium. I don’t know how much you guys talked about it late last week, but they had this draft party. The Patriots had 1900 tickets sold. The place was absolutely buzzing. You know, the line to get in was snaking all the way, like the setup down there. It was like going to a movie theater to get into the stadium. So there was this great energy there. And Jerod Mayo addressed the crowd before the draft. As you know, we’re going to get a great player at three, and stick around because we could always sneak back into the first round. And I’m thinking to myself like, really? He just served that up to everyone. So I start with that because they actually did try, based on what I understand. So it’s the end of the first round, the Bills had traded down to pick 32. And I was told the Patriots had an offer to get back in at 32. And the Bills ended up taking an offer from the Panthers instead. And I think the intel there, Fred, is partially like if you’re the Bills, you’d probably rather deal with a team outside your division. And the Bills and Panthers have a connection; the Panthers’ new general manager Dan Morgan has a long-time connection with Brandon Beane, the Bills’ general manager. So those were two factors working against the Patriots trying to get back in at that 32 pick.
Fred Toucher: Okay. Do you know who they might have been targeting there?
Mike Reiss: Why would they have done that? So this is more like deduction than knowing for sure. I don’t know the answer. But if the information is accurate, which I 100% believe it is, you know, Xavier Lletget, the receiver from South Carolina, went at 32. And then Keon Coleman, the receiver from Florida State, went at 33. And then the Patriots were picking at 34. And they traded back. So my thought would be if you’re at 34 and you traded back, whoever you were going up for just went off the board. So I don’t know, I mean that’s my, that would be the way I would piece it together. And I would say guys, that’s very normal for the draft. Like, try to go up for someone, can’t always get the trade, so you move to the next guy on your board.
