What ESPN’s Mike Reiss is hearing about the Patriots’ strategy in NFL Draft
During this morning’s Toucher & Hardy radio program, Mike Reiss from ESPN discussed the upcoming NFL Draft and the New England Patriots’ plans for their 3rd overall pick. Reiss mentioned JJ McCarthy as a potential consideration for the Patriots but noted uncertainty about whether McCarthy is a consideration at three specifically or in a trade-back scenario. Reiss also discussed the nature of smokescreens and rumors as the draft approaches, highlighting the complexity of evaluating draft narratives.

WALLACH: Mike, now that we’re about 72 hours out from the draft, we’ve heard a lot about JJ McCarthy over the last month. Fred correctly said that he was going to zip up draft boards and be a guy in consideration here in the top ten. I know you said you’re not aware of how the Patriots have ranked these quarterbacks, but can you say definitively that McCarthy is a consideration at three for this team?
ESPN MIKE REISS: I can see him being considered. I don’t know if I could say he’s a consideration at three, Jon. You know, like, I don’t know if they have him rated that highly, but when you look at their trail, you know, Jerod Mayo and Elliot Wolf traveled out to Michigan for his pro day in late March. Then they bring him into the facility; like, they’ve invested a lot of time in him. And I don’t think that’s a smoke screen. So I do think he’s a consideration. The question to me would be, is he a consideration at three, or is he a consideration in a scenario? And I think this is tough to do. But Adam Schefter writes about it a little bit this morning. Where do you trade back up but then come back up, you know, to get McCarthy, whether it’s at 4, 5, or 6, and try to add some assets. But to me, that’s tough to pull off.
ROB “HARDY” POOLE: Okay. So Mike, you mentioned earlier about not wanting to be used by anybody. Belichick mentioned it with McAfee last week how agents and everything are out there at this time of year, trying to create smokescreens as we get closer to the draft. Do you think the rhetoric in the stories, whether it’s the Jayden Daniels report about not wanting to play for Washington or anything else we hear as we get closer to the draft, do you think there is a greater chance that the stories in the reports and rumors are smokescreens, or do these things become more real as we get closer to Thursday night?
ESPN MIKE REISS: Well, I think it probably depends on which ones, like Hardy. I would say, like, Jayden Daniels, I don’t think he’s going to say, “I’m only playing for one team.” Like, I think ultimately that’ll be, like, whoever drafts him, that’s where he’s going to go. And so the question to me is more, how does Washington view him? Right. Like, so I would say more like I look at the Patriots as an example. Like, Eliot Wolff says, “We’re open for business for trading.” Do I think that’s not the likely scenario? Hardy, like, I don’t think it’s more like, you know, you’re either a motivated seller or you’re sort of a curious seller. And I would put them more in the curious seller category, like, “Oh, if someone’s going to knock us over, yeah, we’ll listen, but we’re not looking to move out of here.” That’s how I sort of view their position right now.
