Jim Murray: I’m small “c” concerned about the Celtics
The Boston Celtics have lost two games in a row and are coming off a 118-109 loss to the New York Knicks at home on Thursday night. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, Jim Murray admitted that he’s a bit concerned about the Celtics as they playoffs are close to beginning.
Should you be concerned about the Celtics?
Jim Murray: So it’s clear the Celtics are just slapping it out there and playing out the string. They’re waiting for the playoffs to start and fine, I guess, if that’s how you want to play. It’s fine to a point though, because look, and I already know what’s going to happen tonight against Charlotte and Sunday against the stupid Wizards to close out the season, the Celtics are going to throttle them both, even if it’s the likes of Payton Pritchard and, Jimmy’s beloved Sammy Buckets in the starting five, I’ll be labeled a “worrywart”, everyone’s going to be high in their own green supply going into the first round of the playoffs, it was “no big deal”. But, sorry, not sorry here. Like, I just can’t help feeling there’s something a little deeper. Call it small “c” concerning about these last couple of losses, especially last night against the Knicks. They got destroyed by the Knicks. Beat up by the Knicks. And I can’t shake that feeling.
Jim Murray: And not to go all the Colin Cowherd on you but (Cowherd Impression Voice), “it’s like when you feel a mild toothache. You tell yourself no big deal, probably nothing. Perhaps I’ve been eating too much sugar lately, so you blow it off. That’s a problem for tomorrow’s you. But as time goes on, that ache becomes a debilitating problem and when you finally go to the dentist to take care of it, it’s too late”. And so the mild toothache I feel with the Celtics, it’s the things I’ve seen tripped him up the last couple of postseasons. The whole “too cool for school” attitude, the feeling they can collectively flip the switch. Something that need I remind you, and them, that only works for teams that have won before, like the LeBron Heat, you can flip the switch when you’ve actually won. You know how to do it. And the other thing, the incessant bitching by Jayson Tatum right now to the refs, which Stan Van Gundy rightfully called him out for, just the whole vibe, the complacency I see right now…I don’t like it. I don’t like it because I’ve seen it before. Could be nothing. Could be me. just being “Big Jim chicken little” whatever. But it could be me also knowing deep down in my core that another Celtic root canal is right around the corner in the next couple of months. I don’t like it.
