Felger: I’m out on sudden death in sports
Felger’s Alma Mater, Boston University, lost in overtime in the Frozen Four semi-finals on Thursday night. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, he talked about how he is done with sudden death in sports.
Felger is OUT on Sudden Death Overtime in Sports…
Felger: Do you want to take that everyone’s going to hate?
Mazz: Sure.
Jim Murray: Yeah.
Felger: It’s going to make me look like a giant baby.
Mazz: Even better.
Felger: After all these years listening to me, you know I’m honest. So when I tell you I’ve been feeling this way for a while, and I felt this way before the result….you just have to believe me. I’ve learned that. Okay. I’ve earned it.
Mazz: Don’t strain a muscle patting yourself on the back over there.
Felger: I’m not the only one. I think, Mazz if you had said the same thing, you’ve built up goodwill as an honest, forthright person, which is what I am.
Mazz: That’s not what I hear about me, but go ahead.
Felger: This is a big lead up because it’s going to sound so weak because my team lost last night in overtime. But I’m kind of done with sudden death overtime. I don’t like it. I don’t like sudden death overtime. I don’t like it in anything, but I really don’t like it in hockey. Now, I’m not sitting here saying that they need to change the rule. They’re not going to change the rule because no one agrees with me. So I’m not saying they should change the rule. I’m telling you….I don’t like sudden death overtime in hockey. I don’t like it in anything. It’s not fun even when you win.
Felger: It’s almost always a bad goal like last night. It’s either the goalie blows it, which the BU goalie did. It’s either a bad goal on the goalie, or it’s sloppy, or it’s a bad bounce or it’s lucky. That’s almost always how these games end, right? I’m just kind of done with it. I don’t love it. And it’s been it’s been building. I’ve been telling you, and you know I’ve said this, that I think what is fast becoming one of the most overrated things in all of sports is these multiple overtime sudden death NHL playoff games. Overrated. Overrated. They take too long. The quality of play suffers the longer they go. They tend to ruin a series or change the series. You play three overtimes in game one, just look at what game 2 and game 3 look like. And I’ve been out on that for a while, you know that. I’m also kind of out on sudden death. I don’t love it. It’s never a good goal. It’s almost never a good goal. So it’s like, the team that deserves to win sometime.
