Patriots have top quarterback prospect ‘squarely on their radar’

The lying season continues.
It’s not ESPN’s Mike Reiss who is lying, because he is most certainly relaying information he got from a well-placed source. That, or he’s seeing what everyone else is seeing in plain sight. Either way, it’s easy to peg the New England Patriots as a destination for top quarterback prospect Drake Maye.

“North Carolina QB Drake Maye, who is among those the Patriots could be considering with the No. 3 overall pick, impressed first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. He’s squarely on the team’s radar if he is available,” Reiss wrote as part of the rumblings around the league from the NFL owners meetings in Orlando. So, clearly, a huge Patriots contingent should’ve been expected at the UNC Pro Day on Thursday.

That is most certainly the case. According to Patriots will meet with UNC QB Drake Maye ahead of his Pro Day this AM, per sources. Nine guys from New England in Chapel Hill today: Eliot Wolf, Jerod Mayo, Alex Van Pelt, Matt Groh, Pat Stewart, Alonzo Highsmith, TC McCartney, Ben McAdoo & Matt Evans (8 of 9 were also at LSU).
— Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) March 28, 2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Albert Breer, the Patriots planned to meet with Maye before his pro day workouts on Thursday, and brought a caravan’s worth of evaluators. Mayo, Eliot Wolf, Alex Van Pelt, Matt Groh, Pat Stewart, Alonzo Highsmith, T.C. McCartney, Ben McAdoo, and Matt Evans are among the Patriots staffers on hand in Chapel Hill.
Mayo had no shortage of praise for Maye, who has long been considered one of the two or three best QB prospects in the 2024 draft class, when he spoke at the annual coaches breakfast earlier this week.
“Drake Maye had a fantastic interview at the combine. He brings a lot of energy. You can tell he has that leadership ability,” Mayo said. “And, you know, also, the exciting part about a guy like Drake Maye is the ceiling, there is really no ceiling with a guy like that.

“Now, in saying that, when we’re trying to put together this roster, I know a lot of people look at the ceiling, but you also got to kind of see, how low is the floor? And, I would say a guy like Drake Maye, he has a lot of room to grow. He’s a young guy. Honestly, he hasn’t played football nearly as much as these other guys. So, that’s definitely something that we’ve looked at. But he definitely is going to develop.”
If the Patriots do end up drafting Maye, it sounds like Mayo is mentally preparing New England for the kid to sit on the bench to start his career. If the Patriots are NOT planning on taking Maye, which would likely have to be at the No. 3 pick, then Mayo is being brutally honest about his bust potential.
With all that in mind, it’s unclear how firmly Maye is actually on the Patriots’ radar, and for what reasons. But the team is obviously putting forth some due diligence in meeting with him and watching him work out at the UNC Pro Day. It’s just a matter of parsing out the truth between all the reporting – and especially all the yapping straight from guys’ mouths – that spills into the football world this time of year.

Mike Lockhart's NFL Mock Draft filled with bold predictions, surprises
Mike Lockhart, Draft expert on the Toucher & Hardy radio program, shares his Mock Draft filled with surprises and bold predictions!
The Combine is over, Pro Days are ongoing, and the NFL draft is approaching. On Thursday, April 25th, players will hear their names called over three days in Detroit, Michigan. The Chicago Bears are on the clock, with two first-round selections.

After trading Justin Fields to Pittsburgh, it’s a good bet that Caleb Williams will be the first off the boards. Following him, Heisman winner Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Marvin Harrison will be waiting for their turns. The Arizona Cardinals also have two selections in the first round and hold the most picks with 13 overall. The Minnesota Vikings recently acquired an extra pick and are rumored to be moving up to get a quarterback, possibly leapfrogging the New York Giants and trading up with the Chargers. There could be as many as five quarterbacks taken in the first round. The Offensive Line has a ton of depth, and many linemen will be taken on Day One. Joe Alt from Notre Dame could be the first of the group called. Wide Receiver will be a common selection on Thursday night, with three of them potentially taken in the top ten and the rest scattered throughout the first round. Cornerback is a strong position this year, with Alabama boasting a couple of players who may go early in Terrion Arnold and the intriguingly named Kool-Aid McKinistry. Running backs are not expected to be called on day one this year, unlike the previous year when Bijan Robinson went to Atlanta. The tight end position is not highly projected to be taken, but Brock Bowers is an exception and may go early on day one. Pass-rushing prospects are relatively scarce this year, with only a few expected to be drafted in the first round. Dallas Turner from Alabama should go in the top 15, while Laiata Latu is expected to go a little later. Notably, Carolina, Houston, and Cleveland currently do not have first-round picks.
