Dan O’Brien prepares you for the solar eclipse, soaring hotel rates
While most people in New England look forward to the month of April as an opportunity to shed the months of darkness and solitude that we’ve endured around here, this April brings an opportunity to experience complete darkness in the middle of the day, which has most people excited beyond compare…
That’s because this year, on April 8th, at approximately 2:00 in the afternoon, most of New England (specifically, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) will experience a Total Solar Eclipse.
And what’s making it interesting this time around is the fact that the shadow of the moon is going to cast a narrow strip of land into complete darkness in the middle of the day, causing most of us to just stare upward at the sun (which you shouldn’t do!) while everything around us is in darkness. The path of this total solar eclipse, starting in Texas and moving Northeast through 13 U.S. States, will undoubtedly give millions of people the opportunity to experience it, weather-permitting, of course!
And that’s where it gets interesting…
Because if you want to travel to see this year’s total solar eclipse and you haven’t made reservations or planned out your adventure yet, good luck! A recent search of hotel rooms in Burlington, Vermont (which will be directly in the path of the total solar eclipse) found rates in the $800 to $900 a night range; a far cry from the average $159 a night just a few weeks before… And all of that is based on booking and paying for it ahead of time…
But what happens if it’s rainy and cloudy, and the eclipse happens but nobody gets to see it? You’re on your own on that one, my friend.
But, seeing as though the next scheduled Total Solar Eclipse isn’t supposed to happen until August of 2044, you may just want to run out and buy those goofy Eclipse glasses while you can; just make sure they’re not counterfeit!
