Marc Bertrand: Jerod Mayo has once again contradicted himself
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo spoke at the NFL Coach’s Breakfast on Monday in Orlando. While discussing a number of topics, including what the plan is with the 3rd overall pick in the NFL Draft, Mayo spoke at length, but did he actually say anything of substance?
“Jerod ‘Full Throttle’ Mayo”
Beetle: Jerod Mayo to me is a guy who just says things and, oftentimes contradicts himself. That’s what I find Jerod Mayo to be. Jerod ‘Full Throttle’ Mayo. Today talking about slow building and having patience, and how it was most important to bring back the guys that were on the roster. Also, saying what you just heard in that clip about the 3rd overall pick. Also saying the guaranteed way to succeed is by accumulating more picks, while also saying there are five quarterbacks in this draft that he could see the Patriots putting on their roster. It’s just like he says a lot of things just to say things.
Zolak: It feels like he’s been a little bit coached up since the last time he spoke. You know, obviously with the, hey, we got some cash to burn thing. And when you open with a statement to sort of clarify the direction of the organization and how we’re going to build this thing. He said what I wanted him to to say. And that’s yeah, we’re interested in a quarterback at three. But the pick is up for grabs if anybody wants it, it’s for sale.
Beetle: I think he said nothing concrete though.
Zolak: Now they’re going to play this game for a month, right?
Beetle: It’s kind of their job.
Zolak: Yeah, that’s his job. He’s been coached up for this since the last time.
Beetle: All right, so why why would we read into anything that he said today?
Zolak: I mean, that’s the tough part of this, right? Because everybody everybody wants the big splash. Everybody wants wants the quarterback. We all do. And you know, the more and more you study these guys, if you’re starting to blend guys and there’s no there’s no clear drop from from three down to four, then other things are in play at that point. If you’re asking me because you have so many needs to fill, and if you don’t love the guy and you don’t think he’s ready to play that, don’t pick him. Don’t pick him. Trade out, get the picks, trade back. Get another quarterback later. I wouldn’t have a problem with that because it doesn’t feel like they’re close, right?
Beetle: Yeah. I mean, but he’s saying be patient. But at the same time also during the same sit down saying, but we are very much in the trade market for a wide receiver. So which is it? I felt like you spent the entire time this morning talking out of both sides of his mouth on just about every topic that came up, which might be a tactic, which might be a way of getting up there using a lot of words and saying nothing. Might be what it is. Which means I’m not putting any stock in anything the guy says.
