Fred Toucher: I brought my daughter to see Olivia Rodrigo – My review
Hello, everybody. Hello! It’s me, Fred Toucher. Here’s my honest review of Olivia Rodrigo live in concert!
I took my 13-year-old daughter to see Olivia Rodrigo in Detroit last weekend. Rodrigo has two shows coming up in Boston, but they are on Monday and Tuesday nights, which is no good. Plus, I like going to Detroit because I grew up there.
My daughter and I used to watch a show on streaming called “Bizaardvark” about two dorky female teens who are best friends. They make dumb videos that are supposed to be ironic, but I am too old and too smart to be charmed by just any Disney show. Unless that show is “Brotherly Love.” That show was something special. It featured all three of the Lawrence brothers: Joey, the oldest, ran an auto mechanics garage and due to some circumstances was left in charge of his real-life brothers: Matthew and the youngest one.
“Brotherly Love” also had the fat guy that put the curse on Kramer in “The Betrayal” episode of Seinfeld. There was a “will they, won’t they” relationship dynamic with Joey and a woman that also worked at the auto shop. Not to spoil anything but they hook up!
Anyway, back to Olivia Rodrigo. My daughter Zoey and I got to the Little Caesars Arena earlier than you would for a normal show. The reason is that young fans like “merch.” Clothes that the headliner makes that are only available at the shows. With merch in hand, we got to our seats in time for a few songs from the opener, Chappell Roan. I think she had a backing track because her voice would continue to sing even when the mic was nowhere close to her mouth. People still put the flashlights of their phones on, which is this generation’s version of holding up a lighter. People barely smoke anymore 🙁
On to Olivia! She had a big screen behind her that had a video of candles burning. The candles spelled out “Guts,” the name of her tour. When they burned out, the band arrived on stage. They were all girls!!! I suppose that was a good message for my daughter.
Olivia came out and played some songs I had never heard. She seemed to sing live, and her band was definitely real. She had a bunch of lyrics about being angry with her exes. Isn’t it funny how after a certain age there is no way I could have mustered up enough emotion after a breakup to fill a Hallmark, let alone an entire album? I think that’s why your favorite band at 18 is your favorite band for life.
Olivia talked to the crowd and would swear in a way that you could tell was not overly natural for her. In fact, my daughter would turn to me and roll her eyes when Olivia was talking. Zoey knows what REAL swearing sounds like. She is a huge Andrew Dice Clay fan. (I’m joking moron)
Rodrigo played for 90 minutes, and I must say she is a good performer. I only had to plug my ears twice, and that was the two times she asked the audience to scream. She played piano for a while and rode around sitting on a crescent moon so she would be singing in front of every part of the crowd.
The show ended with a bunch of confetti falling from the ceiling. My daughter asked a security guard on the floor to hand her some. It is in the pocket of my jacket as I write this. I guarantee that my daughter never asks for those little pieces of paper back.
