Massachusetts: It’s Raining Bagels In Boston
Chances are you have noticed the influx of a popular breakfast item taking over Massachusetts mornings. That’s because there have been a few new and unique bagel shops in the greater Boston area that people have been raving about.
Let’s get right to it and start with the most unique.
Brick Street Bagels
This is a bagel pop-up shop. Yes, a pop-up. Brick Street describes itself as a “Vermont baker in the South End,” which currently cooks up small-batch bagels. Back in November, Boston Uncovered explained how city residents were waiting in line for more than an hour to score Brick Street Bagels. Founder and owner, Jordan Renouf, has a bakery in the south end, and began by delivering bagels that were ordered. This became quite popular, so the idea was born to create pop-up shops. Spots have included all around the south end and occasionally in South Boston.
“Bagel flavors include asiago, everything, sesame, plain, and rosemary sea salt,” Boston Uncovered explains. You can follow the Brick Street Bagels story here on their Instagram, showing Renouf baking batches of fresh, hot bagels in his own kitchen.
Rebelle Artisan Bakery
Located at 249 Third St in Cambridge, Rebelle recently picked up and moved from Rhode Island. Boston.com recently named Rebelle as one of the five new restaurants they are most excited about. They explain that these bagels, “undergo a two-day fermentation, including 24 hours of cold-proofing, which slows down the fermentation to give the crust a crispier look and more flavor.”
Their menu currently includes ten different bagel flavors, including a pumpernickel everything and a special pretzel bagel. That’s not all, however. Rebelle also will offer a wide range of lox, spreads, and pastries. The shop is expected to open later this month.
Lastly, if chain bagel shop bagels are more of your preference, Bruegger’s Bagels has 19 locations in the New England region alone. Though none of their Boston bagel shops are technically new for 2024, there are four locations that are also consistently busy.
3 New England Restaurants Ranked For Having Best Breakfast Sandwiches
As a father of four, my mornings are always a bit hectic. I enjoy being an early bird; however, I rarely have the time to prep a good breakfast. Therefore, I was quite thrilled to see that Tasting Table recognized three New England restaurants for having the best breakfast sandwiches in the country. I’m always looking for a good quick breakfast.
A morning in my world usually consists of a sunrise workout, followed by a scramble to get myself and the kids out of the house. Then I embark on an hour-long drive to the office. On the weekends, it’s taking one of my kids to their sports game. Let’s focus on the latter for a moment.
While I am more lenient on my breakfast choice (a banana or shake will do), I insist upon a healthy start for the little guys. Driving them all around New England on weekends requires a few drive-thru meals that you eat in the car. My preference is for the kids to have something substantial, with a protein they enjoy. A breakfast sandwich is often the choice.
The perfect breakfast sandwich should follow three simple rules. It’s quick, both to order and make. It’s fresh (not a microwaved egg slab pulled out of plastic). Finally, it’s a balanced hand-held item that is not too heavy, processed or sugar-filled.
When trekking through interstates and unfamiliar towns at sunrise, it’s easy to settle upon the quickest Dunkin’ Donuts. Now, there are some other options that you (and I) should know about. These three New England restaurants ranking among the best breakfast sandwiches in the country.
Before we get into the list, it is necessary to give one other shout-out. The Portland, Oregon establishment named by Tasting Table has both the best restaurant and sandwich name. The “Yolko Ono” by Fried Egg I’m In Love.
