Scott Zolak: It felt like the Patriots were running the clock out
On Monday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Scott Zolak explained that he felt like the Patriots ran the clock out against the Chiefs.
I don’t like how they sat on the ball at the end…
Scott Zolak: Well, the problem with me is I start clock watching and then you start counting possessions. The lack of sense of urgency there in that second half. I know there were injuries. I know there were injuries, but you’re not jockeying for a first round bye for home field advantage, for hosting a wild card game. You’re 3-10. What do you got to lose by going empty? So, you got your backup, backup left tackle in. Okay? So what? You’re going to be 3-11 and that’s what ends up happening. I didn’t like the way they sat on the ball at the end of the game. You’re down 10, you’re not down 27. 27, you run the clock out. I felt they ran the freakin clock out.
I just had a problem with that at the end of the game because you were in that sucker. You don’t come out at halftime and throw that awful pick he threw, you’re there. I mean, you’re turning the ball over. You’re converting on points. The Mapu pick. Zappe had it going on. Him and Mahomes had two incompletions each in that first half and you’re there. The problem is your margin for error is so small, you can’t have stupid penalties like Brandon Schooler does on every special team that he plays on. He’s a problem now. 36-yard difference.
You had that ball at midfield at the start of the game. Now you’re down inside your ten. Guess what happens to Billy O’Brien then as it would with me. All of a sudden we get a little conservative because we’re backed up and we don’t want to give them a quick seven.
Phil Perry: My primary takeaway is same old, same old. You know, after a week of reporting on what’s going on with the coach and a fresh report from NFL media saying Bill Belichick can maybe save his job with a strong finish down the stretch. We know the Patriots aren’t making the playoffs, but hey, maybe they went out and maybe the Krafts rethink this thing and maybe this decision isn’t made and maybe they’re not actually leaning strongly in one direction and maybe they actually need a little bit of extra time once the season ends to actually come to a decision. That all comes down from Ian Rapoport on Saturday night.
Then they come out, they play exactly the same way that they’ve played all year. You mentioned the penalties. It’s not just the Schooler penalty that wipes out a massive play. You get a defensive hold that eliminates a fumble recovery by Jabrill Peppers. You have an offensive facemask. This is who they are. This is what this team is. And it’s why I look back at that Rapaport report and I say, are they really going to change whatever way they’re leaning? Are they really going to make a decision based on four games as opposed to the entire breadth of the season or maybe even the last four years? That would be stunning to me.
