Top offensive tackle prospect officially declares for 2024 NFL Draft
The top offensive tackle and one of the top overall players in the 2024 NFL Draft class has officially declared. On Wednesday morning, Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt announced on social media that he will be foregoing his senior season, and skipping the Fighting Irish’s upcoming bowl game to begin preparing for the draft.
Alt, who will turn 21 in February, is expected to be a top-10 pick in this year’s draft. He’s one of the two top tackles on the board along with Penn State’s Olu Fashanu (who is yet to declare), with many experts listing him at the very top of the tackle rankings.

The son of former Chiefs All-Pro tackle John Alt, Joe is a converted quarterback and tight end who started playing tackle in 2021. Very experienced for a true junior, Alt made 33 starts at left tackle over three years for the Irish. In almost three full seasons as a starter Alt allowed more than two pressures in a game just three times, and never more than once in a season. This past year Alt was knocked for just five pressures in 368 pass-blocking snaps, and called for just two penalties on 713 total offensive snaps.
With his combination of size (6-foot-8, 322 pounds), athleticism, and flexibility, Alt has the anchor to deal with power rushers but is quick enough on his feet to not let speed rushers get around him. He’s also a very technically sound blocker that plays with a great motor and will finish blocks to the whistle.
Given all of that, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Alt is expected by most to go in the top-10, if not the top-five. With a shortage of starting-caliber tackles around the NFL, he’ll certainly be a name most fan bases should be aware of as the pre-draft process begins.
