Heading into the pre-draft process the top of the 2024 NFL draft class is headlined by three players – all underclassmen. As the 2023 college football season wraps up, all attention is on USC quarterback Caleb Williams, UNC quarterback Drake Maye, and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Despite all the talk around them none had officially declared for the NFL Draft. That changed Monday night, when Maye became the first of the trio to do so.
Maye announced his intention via a post on X/Twitter. The 21-year-old opted out of the team’s bowl game – as expected – to turn his attention to preparing for the NFL Draft.
A five-star recruit and the fourth-ranked quarterback in his recruiting class, Maye became the Tar Heels’ starting quarterback as a redshirt sophomore in 2022. In 26 career starts he went 17-9, leading UNC to an ACC Championship appearance in 2022. He completed 64.9 percent of his passes for 8,018 yards with 63 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, adding another 1,209 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground.
As the pre-draft process begins, experts point to Maye’s size (6-foor-4, 230 pounds), arm strength, and athleticism as stand-out traits. Those skills allow him to create plays out of structure. At the same time, there are some concerns he may be too quick to go into that approach, which may not translate completely from the ACC to the NFL. Still, his physical abilities set a very high floor.
While Williams (who has yet to declare for the draft but did opt out of his team’s bowl game) is still viewed as the consensus top quarterback in the draft, Maye is his closest challenger. He’s currently projected to be a top-three pick, it just seem like which of those three picks is the main question.

Which quarterbacks raised or lowered their NFL Draft stock during championship weekend
Last week, we took a look at which top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft had the most to gain or lose during college football’s Championship Weekend. With those games in the books it only makes to now do some following up, right?
We looked at five quarterbacks from the Power Five championship games, plus the top Group of Five quarterback in the country. Collectively those quarterbacks went 3-3 in their championship games, with all three winners’ teams landing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
For the purposes of the NFL Draft process though, we’re less interested in the team results and more focused on the performance of each individual quarterback on his own. Who played well, who didn’t? While these were just individual games and won’t make or break a prospects entire draft status, evaluators do tend to put more weight on bigger games against an increased level of competition.
Let’s take a look back at the six quarterbacks we highlighted last week, and each of their performances. At the end, we’ll see whose draft stock went up, whose went down, and whose stayed the same.
