Sunday marked the official fate of the 2023 Patriots

For New England Patriots fans, it may have felt for weeks or even months like the 2023 season was over for all competitive purposes. But on the Sunday of Week 14, that became a reality.
With the Cincinnati Bengals’ 34-14 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the early window on Sunday, the Patriots were officially mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for 2023. There was one last lingering scenario that would have seen the Patriots get in as a Wild Card team at 7-10, which was extended by the team’s Thursday night win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that scenario didn’t make it through the first games on Sunday.
This is the earliest the Patriots have been eliminated from playoff contention since 2000, the first year of the Bill Belichick era. They were eliminated in Week 13 that year, when the NFL season was one week shorter than it is now.
The only other time the Patriots had been eliminated before the final week of the season was the 2020 season – the COVID year. That means next Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs will be the first time the Patriots play in front of fans at Gillette Stadium without the chance or guarantee of playing in a playoff game that season.
In total, this will be the sixth time the Patriots miss the playoffs in Bill Belichick’s 24 seasons. They also did so in 2000, 2002, 2009, 2020, and 2022. It’ll be the first time they’ve missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the 1999 and 2000 seasons.

Back in the win column: 7 takeaways from the Patriots' win over the Steelers
The New England Patriots are back in the win column. On Thursday night they snapped a five-game losing streak, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-18 at Acrisure Stadium.
In a season that has become more about draft position than in-game results, this win drew mixed reactions. The reality is, it shouldn’t.

First off, making losing a habit is never a good thing. That’s a slippery slope to go down. Even in a down season, maintaining overall organizational direction is important.
As for the 2024 pick itself, this loss is hardly a backbreaker. The Patriots are still where they were entering the night, in position for the second overall pick. That’s thanks to a significant edge in the strength of schedule tiebreaker with the Arizona Cardinals.
Finally, it’s simply too soon to declare this win is catastrophic for the Patriots’ draft position. Last year, the Houston Texans winning two of their final three games to fall out of the top pic was seen as a disaster. Yet picking second overall and landing C.J. Stroud ended up being the best thing that could have happened for them.
Draft pick aside, what did we learn from this game? Let’s get to tonight’s takeaways…
