After losing quarterback Malik Cunningham off their practice squad on Tuesday, the Patriots may already be looking for a replacement. The team hosted three free agents for workouts on Tuesday according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, including two players with quarterback experience.
That group includes former Brown quarterback E.J. Perry. Perry is a native of Andover, Massachusetts. He attended Andover High School and originally played collegiately at Boston College for two years before transferring to Brown. In his lone season as the starters for the Bears his dual-threat style led to him being named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year. He was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, which is the FCS Heisman.

Perry drew the attention of multiple NFL teams leading up to the 2022 NFL Draft, and was invited to participate in the NFL Combine and had pre-draft meetings with a few teams – including the Patriots. However he ended up going undrafted. He’s since spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, although he’s yet to appear in an NFL game. He also spent time with the Michigan Panthers of the USFL.
The Patriots also worked out wide receiver Kendall Hinton on Tuesday. A college quarterback at Wake Forest who made the change to wide receiver in the NFL, Hinton spent three seasons with the Denver Broncos from 2020-2022 after signing as a UDFA. He appeared in 29 games in that span, mostly as a wide receiver. However, Hinton was used as an ’emergency’ quarterback in 2020 when the rest of the Broncos’ quarterback were ruled ineligible to play in a game due to the league’s COVID-19 policies at the time.
