Patriots lose popular practice squad player to Ravens
The New England Patriots’ most talked-about practice squad player is heading elsewhere. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that rookie Malik Cunningham is signing with the Baltimore Ravens on their active roster.
Cunningham, 25, signed with the Patriots this past offseason as a UDFA out of Louisville. A college quarterback who was a four-year starter for the Cardinals, the Patriots had him mostly working at wide receiver during his time in New England.
Still, Cunningham’s quarterback experience kept him in the conversation as the team went through struggles at the position early in the season. Despite that he only appeared in three games. He was signed to the active roster in Week 6 and was one of only two active quarterbacks along with Mac Jones. In that game Cunningham played just six snaps – four as a wide receiver and two as a quarterback on designed QB run plays.
Following that game Cunningham was waived and re-signed to the practice squad. He was elevated off the practices squad for each of the Patriots’ two most recent games, but didn’t play a snap in either.
Now in Baltimore Cunningham is reunited with Lamar Jackson, who he was teammates with at Louisville. Cunningham took over the starting job for the Cardinals the year after Jackson left. Now in Baltimore Cunningham will have a chance to compete for the backup job behind Jackson with Tyler Huntley and Josh Johnson already on the roster. It’s possible he continues to play some wide receiver as well.
Following the news, Cunningham released a statement to ESPN. “I wanted to thank Mr. [Robert] Kraft and Coach [Bill] Belichick for giving me opportunity to play with the Patriots,” he said. “I learned a lot from them. I want to be a coach one day, so I would take notes from coach Belichick because he’s one of the greatest of all time. I had great teammates in New England and built relationships that will last a lifetime. But I just feel like this is a good opportunity for me and I’m excited to be a Baltimore Raven.”
This move leaves the Patriots with an opening on their practice squad. At quarterback the team still has Jones, Bailey Zappe, then Will Grier on the practice squad. The Patriots lone practice squad wide receiver now is T.J. Luther.
