Ted Johnson: Jonnu Smith was handing Kyle Dugger his “lunch”
On Friday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand live at training camp, Ted Johnson was impressed by New England Patriots tight end Jonnu Smith as he went head-to-head with Kyle Dugger in 7-on-7s.
Ted Johnson: “I would say with Jonnu Smith the thing about him is, and you mentioned it Hardy, he got paid a lot of money. I think maybe the most guarantee of any of the free agents they brought in last year. So, clearly you have to get him involved because of the money that he was given. 28 catches, 1 touchdown, very much underwhelmed what we thought last year. Him being here in the offseason I think has made a big difference and that goes a long way with Bill Belichick. He did not come to the offseason program last year, got off to a slow start, and then when he did get his opportunities early and particularly that Saints game, he had such a bad game, it was like you didn’t hear from him again the rest of the year. It was just here, here and there. So no more fullback, more of it tied to 2-tight end set, Jonnu Smith Getting paid a lot of money. They have to, have to find ways to get him open and they are making a concerted effort to get him the ball today and so far, he looks pretty good. Kyle Dugger having a rough day, and Kyle Dugger maybe not the best cover guy, but he’s a good cover guy. Jonnu Smith is kind of handing him his lunch a little bit.”
