Celtics clear logjam with trade with Grizzlies
The Grizzlies decided to help clear the Celtics’ backcourt logjam Friday, as the sides came to an agreement on a trade that will send guards Kris Dunn and Carsen Edwards to Memphis in exchange for Juancho Hernangomez. The teams will have a 2026 second-round pick swap in the trade, which was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Drafted by the Celtics with a second-round pick in 2019, Edwards appeared in 68 games over two seasons, totaling 244 points, and shooting just 37.2 percent from the field (30.2 from deep), along with 73 rebounds, 38 assists, and 19 steals.
Dunn, meanwhile, came to the Celtics from Atlanta as part of the deal that sent Tristan Thompson to the Kings. It was always believed that the Celtics were going to try and flip Dunn at some point, and Friday’s trade accomplishes just that.
Standing at 6-foot-9, and with the ability to play both forward and some center, Hernangomez is another versatile option for a Celtic bench that’s seemingly always looking for more. Hernangomez is coming off a 2020-21 that saw him average 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, along with a 43.5 field goal percentage, in 17:18 per night over his 52 appearances.
As noted by Woj, the deal will not become official until Sept. 15, when the contracts of both Dunn and Edwards will be “allowed to be aggregated in the trade.”
