Report: Patriots make pre-draft trade involving multiple draft picks
Bill Belichick isn’t waiting for the NFL Draft to start to begin dealing picks. The Patriots swung a trade with the Houston Texans on Monday, adding to their draft assets.
According to Trade: Patriots dealt their fifth-round pick to the Texans for their sixth- and seventh-round picks, per sources.
UPDATE: The Patriots traded the 170th pick for 183 and 245. That’s a even eight point swap on the NFL trade chart.
It’s not surprising to see the Patriots move out of the fifth round. Since 2012, they’ve made just sixth fifth-round picks, while trading away 18 fifth-round picks in that same time span.
With this deal, the Patriots now have nine picks in this year’s draft. They’ve selected at least eight players in each of the last four years, and have averaged 8.6 picks per draft over the last 10 years.
