Red Sox reportedly add another pitcher to the fold
The Red Sox have added another starting pitcher to the fold, with lefty Patrick Sandoval signed to a two-year deal worth over $18 million, according to multiple reports.
The deal for Sandoval comes with the 28-year-old in the midst of a recovery from Tommy John surgery, and with Sandoval not expected to pitch until in the second half of the 2025 MLB season.
Limited to just 16 starts last season before that elbow injury led to the aforementioned Tommy John procedure, Sandoval posted a 2-8 record and 5.08 ERA over 79.2 innings of work for the Angels.
It was yet another step back for Sandoval, whose best season undoubtedly came in 2022, which featured a career-best 2.91 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 148.2 innings of work over 27 starts. Sandoval’s 3.3 WAR during the 2022 season was actually tied for the 15th-best WAR among American League pitchers.
Given the nature of this signing, with Sandoval expected to miss the majority of the 2025 season, Sandoval’s pay day reflects that, with a $5.5 million salary in 2025 and a $12.75 million salary in 2026, according to an update from the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.
When Sandoval’s game is on, he possesses one of the best changeups in baseball, and boasts an arsenal that also features a sinker, slider, four-seam fastball, and sweeper.
Sandoval is the second starter added by Boston this offseason, following the club’s trade for Chicago’s Garrett Crochet earlier this month, and joins a rotation that features Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello, Kutter Crawford, and expected to include Lucas Giolito after an injury kept him out for all of 2024.
