Patriots mauled by Jaguars in London, fall by 32-16 final
The New England Patriots fell to 1-6 on the 2024 season after a 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday.
Rookie quarterback Drake Maye went 26-of-37 passing for 276 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions in the losing effort, good for a 109.7 passer rating. He also threw two pass attempts that were nearly picked off, but Maye was far from the problem for the Patriots in the game.
Jacksonville, meanwhile, netted 364 yards of total offense, including 171 rushing yards on 39 run plays (4.4-yard average). They also scored a back-breaking touchdown on a punt return before the end of the first half. Jags quarterback Trevor Lawrence went 15-of-20 passing for 193 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.
The Patriots got off to a hot start, on the strength of Maye and the passing game. Maye went 6-of-7 for 62 yards and capped the drive with a touchdown pass to running back JaMycal Hasty, who took a short dump-off and made multiple guys miss on his way to the end zone.

The Pats defense followed up the Maye touchdown pass with a stop on Trevor Lawrence and the Jags offense, ultimately getting the ball back to the offense at their own 15-yard line. Maye drove them 62 more yards and 12 more plays, as his third-down pass attempt to Kendrick Bourne was a little off the mark. They settled for a Joey Slye field goal from 41 yards out to extend their lead to 10-0.
The Jaguars found their answer on their second offensive drive. Picking up chunk plays of 24, 13, and 10 yards on three straight plays set up the Jags in the red zone, where Lawrence cashed in with a touchdown pass to a wide-open Brian Thomas Jr. on third-and-goal, making it 10-7 Patriots.
The Patriots punted for the first time on their third offensive drive, then the Jaguars struck big. Lawrence hit rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for a 58-yard completion to set up first-and-10 from the New England 21, then running back Tank Bigsby powered into the end zone three plays later to put the Jaguars up 14-10.
The Patriots had to punt again after a Maye third-down pass attempt fell incomplete, as rookie receiver Ja’Lynn Polk got his hands on it, but Jags safety Andre Cisco broke it up.

Disaster struck for the Patriots on the next play, as the Jaguars’ Parker Washington beat the first level of tacklers and took it 96 yards to the end zone for another touchdown. The Pats then committed a neutral zone penalty on the ensuing point-after try, which prompted the Jaguars to go for two points, and they converted to go up 22-10. That would be the score at halftime.
Jacksonville got the ball to start the second half and drove right down the Patriots’ throats once again, this time 67 yards in 12 plays. But the Pats were able to hold them to a field goal, making it 25-10.
Maye and the Patriots got the ball back with their first chance to have hope in the game, but Maye’s third-down attempt was ill-advised and nearly intercepted, forcing another punt. The Jaguars then bled 11:24 off the clock on a 17-play drive that nearly reached the end zone, but the Patriots miraculously came up with a stop on fourth-and-1 from the 6-yard line, as linebacker Raekwon McMillan shot the gap and made the tackle on Bigsby for no gain.
The Patriots took advantage of the turnover on downs, as they finally got their downfield passing game rolling again. Maye completed passes of 32 and 33 yards on consecutive plays, to Hunter Henry and Kayshon Boutte, then capped the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Osborn. The two-point attempt was no good, leaving the score at 25-16 midway through the fourth quarter.
The Jags ran more time off the clock on their next drive, but ended up punting it back to the Pats. Maye couldn’t push the Patriots down the field this time, as he took a 14-yard sack to set up a fourth-and-26 situation. Maye’s fourth-down heave fell incomplete, which allowed the Jaguars to run the clock out for the victory.
At 1-6, the Patriots are in contention for the worst record in the NFL. They will try to regroup as they head back to the United States, where they will take on the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium in Week 7.
