Were the Red Sox competitive in the A.L. East in 2024?
The Boston Red Sox have once again been eliminated from playoff contention. On Thursday’s Felger and Mazz, Mazz gave his thoughts on comments from Craig Breslow saying that the team was competitive in the American League East in 2024.
Mazz: Here’s where I would like to begin, because I’ve been reading a lot of the fall out from the Red Sox game in the last little bit and catching up on some things from earlier in the day, I ran across this comment from Craig Breslow, “I think we’ve seen the ability to be competitive in the A.L. East with a young group that’s really exciting, really athletic, really dynamic.” Let me read that again, “I think we have seen the ability to be competitive in the A.L. East..”.. I’m going to stop there…”to be competitive in the A.L. East”….They finished 13 games out of first place! What’s he talking about? What the hell is he talking about? Now I know what you’re going to say, Mike so I’m going to preempt it, because if I were to say to you, what’s the problem with the Red Sox? Your answer would be…they’ve given up.
Felger: Yeah.
Mazz: So how can he sit there with a straight face and tell me that they’re really competitive in the American League East when they’re 13 games out in the loss column. 13 games out of first place with three to go. So whether it’s 10 or 16, you’re going to finish double digits behind the 1st place team in the division.
Felger: After finishing last the previous two years.
Mazz: That’s competitive?
Felger: No
Mazz: So what the Red Sox define “competitive” as now is we don’t completely suck? Is that it? That’s the bar?
Felger: I think so. Yeah.
Mazz: That to me…that’s insulting. That is insulting. What do you think I’m an idiot? Like, really? What are you watching?
