Greg Bedard: I Don’t Think Drake Maye is Ready to Get Reps With The 1’s
On Monday’s edition of Felger & Mazz, the guys are joined by Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal.com. They discussed the state of the franchise, if Drake Maye is developed enough to compete for the starting job, and if the rookie is ready to get reps with the other top players on the team.
He Just Has Too Much To Learn…
Felger: So how do you feel about it being Jacoby Brissett’s team?
Greg Bedard: I’m fine with it. I just think that, Drake (Maye) is just so far away in terms of what he needs to learn and know, in order to operate in this offense, operate as an NFL quarterback. We knew that he was going to be starting from a much lesser position. These guys want to get going, and I think they can only do that with an experienced quarterback in the system. Jacoby’s played really well. He’s brought everything that they’ve hoped for, and I don’t think you really want to mess with it at this point.
Felger: So yeah we’ve been talking about this. Mayo and Van Pelt want to get going, so they’re deferring what’s best for them – versus what’s best for the team or what’s best for the young quarterback, and they are not putting the young quarterback in the best position to succeed. How do you feel about that?
Greg Bedard: I just don’t think Drake Maye’s at that point to insert him into some sort of competition. There’s too much for him to learn on a play by play basis. The other thing that is important when you deal with these young quarterbacks in terms of playing him, compared to the veteran quarterback – like you can’t fool the players. Say you force feed Drake Maye just because he’s the third overall pick and he has the most natural talent; and there are people in the building that still think that he should start from day one. They believe in learning on the job. I just think that if the players see that Drake doesn’t know really what he’s doing in the scheme, and Jacoby does, then why are we starting this kid? All of a sudden doubt creeps then and now you have issues. I think that until Drake Maye takes another step and proves himself to be more on a level with Jacoby as far scheme and getting in and out of plays and all that stuff. I think you run the risk of losing guys on the team.
Mazz: So, Greg, are you saying he’s not even ready to get reps with the ones yet?
Greg Bedard: I mean, he could get the occasional play here and there, or series here and there. But no, I don’t think he’s ready for that. I think he just has too much to learn, not just in the scheme, but footwork too. We’ve seen him have issues with that in camp. I just think the education of Drake Maye takes precedent over anything else.
