Zolak & Bertrand: Drake Maye details area he needs to improve most
Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye joined the Zolak & Bertrand show on Tuesday as he gets ready to compete for the starting job in New England. While Maye was the 3rd overall pick, there has been much made of what a project he is, and whether or not he is ready to take the helm by Week 1. But where does Maye feel that he needs to improve the most?:
“Yeah, I think the biggest thing is being detailed. Knowing all the new terminology with Coach [Alex} Van Pelt’s offense, knowing all the details first. I think going out there like a deer in the headlights as a rookie is not smart. So, fine tuning that and really get to study it and get to know it and be able to teach it back to somebody, that’s kind of how I learn things, be able to teach it back to somebody until you know it. So, you know, you’ll grind that and get really detailed in the playbook and the formations, all the motions, all the little stuff. And, you know, like I said, working on my cadence and under center and using that as a weapon. I think that’s a big thing in the NFL using cadence. You go under center a lot in the red zone in college. But like I said, not as much in the open field. Just getting used to that. But, like I said my game translates pretty well to the NFL. So I’m looking forward to that and look forward to working with the guys, getting out there and getting going.“
