Phil Perry: Patriots are open to Drake Maye starting in Week 1
Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston joined Zolak & Bertrand in studio and shared his thoughts on the Patriots selecting UNC QB Drake Maye with the 3rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Despite plenty of analysts saying Drake Maye needs to sit for part or all of his rookie season, Phil thinks the Patriots are open to the idea of Maye being under center in Week 1. Here are the big takeaways from Phil on the Pats first round pick:
Patriots didn’t get too cute with Drake Maye pick
“I love that they just didn’t get too cute and I didn’t think they would. Honestly, the closer we got, it became pretty clear that that this was going to be the path that they would take. But I think the physical skill set in a conference where you need next level quarterbacking talent to be able to contend for Super Bowls. This is the swing. It’s not J.J. McCarthy. It’s not Michael Penix. It might have been Jayden Daniels, although the weight in the frame would scare me. It’s this. The ability to move around. The ability to pick up yards with your legs. Be creative both with your legs and your arm. Are you going to have to teach him some things? Of course you are. He is not a perfect prospect, but they are things that you should be able to clean up. I thought maybe the most interesting thing we heard from Brian Hoyer, who was with us on Thursday night on NBC Sports Boston, he said the easiest thing to clean up is footwork. That’s the least of your concerns. And so Alex Van Pelt, Ben McAdoo, T.C. McCartney, it’s on you get it cleaned up.”
Patriots are open to Drake Maye starting in Week 1?
“I believe they are. I believe that’s not B.S. when Jerod Mayo tells you, listen, we’re here for competition. We’re going to let these guys compete. And the best player is going to play. Now he made it clear Drake is not our starting quarterback right now. But that doesn’t mean he’s definitely going to sit either. So what I have always said – give me the option. Just give me the option. Don’t tell me absolutely, one way or the other what has to happen right now. Because if it turns out that he is more ready to go right now, if this footwork stuff is relatively easy to clean up and it can happen pretty quickly. Play him right now. What’s the harm? If you think he can handle it from a mental standpoint, and you think he’s going to be able to protect himself, I would have no issues with them playing him right away. But you just you have to see you have to get a feel for what it’s going to look like.”
