Phil Perry: Why I could see Eliot Wolf liking J.J. McCarthy
On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Phil Perry broke down why Eliot Wolf might be a fan of Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy.
Are you buying the buzz?
Marc Bertrand: Buying or selling that Phil Perry? Is that legit? Is that the buzz? Eliot Wolf pushing for J.J.?
Phil Perry: That I don’t know, but I could see him liking J.J. McCarthy because he’s a winner and because he is pretty athletic and he has enough size. He’s about 6’2 and a half, just a shade under 220 pounds. When you look at guys that these Ron Wolf executives have liked in the past they do have pretty good size. They’re not unbelievably large, they’re not Drew Bledsoe or Scott Zolak types. Not quite that big. But Aaron Rodgers obviously, Jordan Love, Derek Carr was a draft pick of Reggie McKenzie. These are all first and second round picks. Ron Wolf himself gave up a first round pick for Brett Farve, who was big enough. All these guys could throw on the move. All these guys had pretty good arms. That’s JJ McCarthy and the reason I bring up Elliot Wolf specifically. Or Drake May. Now here’s what’s interesting to me given where Eliot sits in the Patriots front office right now. When the Browns had the first overall pick in 2018, Eliot Wolf was the assistant GM there under John Dorsey, another Ron Wolf guy. He pushed really hard for Baker Mayfield and was very clear about that very soon after Mayfield was picked when he met with the media. And one of the things that he kept coming back to with Baker Mayfield was the intangibles, the moxie, the energy he brought to his teammates, the toughness. A lot of the things that you’re hearing about J.J. McCarthy right now. Additionally, what did Eliot Wolf love about Baker Mayfield? He was a winner. He won. Well who won in this draft class more than J.J. McCarthy? J.J. McCarthy won as a high schooler, one won championships and won a national championship with IMG. He goes to Michigan, College Football Playoff last year. National champion this year. If that matters to Eliot Wolf and the three of us have talked plenty about quarterback wins in the past, especially as it relates to evaluating college quarterbacks. I don’t find it all that valuable. But if that’s what Eliot Wolf values, wouldn’t he be interested in J.J. McCarthy?
