‘As a fan’ Robert Kraft shares preference for third overall pick

As the New England Patriots get ready to make a decision of what to do with the third overall pick, fans have their ideas about what they’d like to see happen. One of those fans happens to be the team owner, Robert Kraft.
On Monday, Kraft spoke to reporters at the NFL annual meeting in Orlando. Asked whether or not he hopes the team will draft a quarterback with that pick, Kraft approached the question as a fan first.

“As a fan – I’ll put my fan hat on – I definitely would,” Kraft said. “In the end, you can’t win in this league consistently unless you have a first-rate quarterback and a first-rate coach.”
At the same time, Kraft did acknowledge the team should keep all its options open – something head coach Jerod Mayo spoke about on Monday.
“On the other hand you’re in a different position, and we’ve never been in the third draft position since we owned the team,” Kraft continued. “What happens, a lot of people behind are really desperate to move up. We’re going to be open to whatever can come our way.”
“In the end, I’ll let the team make the decision with what they think is best,” Kraft continued. He did close by saying “one way or another, I’d like to see us get a top-rate young quarterback.”
Of course, Kraft has a bit more influence on the team’s decision-making than the average Patriots fan. On Monday, Mayo was asked about ownership as a whole making their voice heard about the pick. He replied with “they don’t want to be involved in football decisions.”

Barth's Patriots Mock Draft 2.0: Getting aggressive

When we did our first Patriots Mock Draft of the offseason back in February, there was still a lot we didn’t know. The Patriots were still in the process of filling out their new coaching staff, the team hadn’t definitively named a head of personnel, and the pre-draft process was just beginning.
Fast forward over a month, and a lot has happened. With Eilot Wolf leading the way the Patriots have assembled a full coaching staff. Meanwhile all the prospects have been through the NFL Combine and most have had their pro days.

There was also NFL free agency, which certainly changes the landscape. In our initial mock draft we had to project some moves for the Patriots (namely signing a big-name wide receiver), most of which did not happen. Instead, the Patriots mostly retained players in free agency, making only minor targeted additions.
That strategy points to one thing – the Patriots are all in on the draft. Wolf’s Packer Way plan of ‘draft and develop’ won’t get an initial boost from free agency. Rather, the goal appears to be trying to find multiple core foundational players in this draft.
With the third overall pick at their disposal, the Patriots are in position to add at least one such player. But could they get aggressive and improve their chances at adding a second? We’ll look into that and more as we get into Patriots Mock Draft 2.0…
