This morning on Toucher & Hardy radio program, Albert Breer from theMMQB.com discussed Phil Perry’s recent piece on his top players in the NFL Draft. Perry believes that Drake Maye is the best fit for the New England Patriots. Breer mentioned Perry’s extensive work in creating prototypes for players under the Belichick era and how Maye fits into that mold. They also discussed Ceronne Battle’s comments about Maye’s potential struggles in cold weather and the scrutiny faced by highly talked-about draft prospects like Maye.

(Yes – there might be some grammar errors)
Fred Toucher: Phil Perry has come out with his top players in the draft. He likes Drake Maye better than any other quarterback in the draft.
Albert Breer: I know Phil has done a ton of work over the years, basically creating prototypes for every Patriot under the Belichick era. Like, this is what they look for in this position and that position based on history. I guess he did the same thing looking back at the Packers, so it looks like Jake Maye kind of fits into that box.
Fred Toucher: Cerrone Battle was on with Felger and Jim yesterday, and he lives in the Carolinas. He was saying Drake’s family is all from North Carolina. He’s never been out of there. He said he would struggle in cold weather, and that he wasn’t confident he could function in an environment like New England.
Albert Breer: Anybody who’s kind of followed a guy, like Cerrone has with Drake Maye, has good perspective on it. So it’s definitely worth listening to that. The more I’ve sort of dug through this with different scouts and everything else, there’s this thing that I think Drake is the victim of, that Caleb Williams is the victim of, and that Marvin Harrison’s the victim of when you’ve been looking at a guy for so long and a guy’s been talked about for so long in a certain context, you run out of nice things to say about him, and then it becomes time to start tearing them down, you know? I think that this happens with draft prospects a lot. Put it this way. When we get to this part of the calendar, the guy who’s usually under the most scrutiny, who’s under attack a little bit, is the guy who we’ve been talking about for a year. Whereas when there’s a guy who maybe just came up during the college season and just burst onto the scene, now all of a sudden you’re still building him up; you’re not tearing him down yet.
Fred Toucher: Caleb Williams is going number one. Cerrone said that Washington whiffed so bad on another North Carolina quarterback that they would be less likely to take a guy from North Carolina or a guy who didn’t play against elite competition. But what are your thoughts on that?
Albert Breer: I hate the thing where you pigeonhole guys into schools because, like, remember that the coach, Jeff Tedford, used to coach at Cal. No. Okay. So there was this stigma around Jeff Tedford quarterbacks where it was like they have weird mechanics and the system’s different. And so Joey Harrington was one of them. Akili Smith was one of them. Okay. Trent Dilfer was one of them. And it was “do not draft a Jeff Tedford quarterback.” Right. And it sounds kind of like they had a point. And then it was there. And then Aaron Rodgers showed up. So I always think that those things are a little silly because I think it’s more about the individual kid and Drake Maye is so different from Sam Howell or Mitch Trubisky. Like, he’s such a different player. If you get up close to him, he looks like he was built in a lab to play quarterback. You know, six foot four, six foot five, 230 pounds. Probably could carry 250 like a really and I think I said this last night on TV, I think people look at it and see the white guy and think it’s Mac Jones. But that’s not what this is like. He is a great athlete, like he was a Division one basketball recruit, so I think there’s a lot to work with there. I would again take what Cerrone said into account, but everybody that I’ve talked to, like every team that I’ve talked to, said this game last year at North Carolina was terrible. And two years ago, when he had the big breakout year, Phil Longo was the offensive coordinator. Wisconsin wound up hiring him away, so he lost his offensive coordinator. They had a lot of guys leave for the NFL. So yeah, he had a younger group around him this year and apparently, like, again, I’m not a coach or scout, but the guys who are who look at this stuff for a living have told me the scheme at North Carolina last year was dreadful, and Drake Maye was fighting through a lot. In his third year, their second-year starter.
