After a promising two-month start to his New England Patriots career, cornerback Alex Austin is going to get a shot at a full offseason with the team. On Thursday afternoon, Austin took to social media to share the Patriots tendering him a contract, meaning he’ll be returning to the team in 2024.
“It’s official.. I’m back for another one!! Can’t wait to turn up with y’all this season… Let’s run it,” Austin posted on X/Twitter.

Austin, 22, was an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA), which applies to players without a contract with only one or two years of NFL tenure. When a player is an ERFA, their team can tender them a one-year, minimum contract to prevent them from hitting free agency.
The Patriots first signed Austin last November to help with their thinning cornerback depth. Austin ended up playing in five games and making one start, recording two pass breakups and an interception.
Prior to joining the Patriots, Austin’s 2023 season began when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Buffalo Bills out of Oregon State. Austin was then released during final roster cuts and signed with the Houston Texans, spent time between their active roster and practice squad before he was eventually claimed off waivers by the Patriots.
Looking ahead to 2024, Austin will likely come into camp competing for a rotational boundary cornerback role. He joins Christian Gonzalez, Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, Shaun Wade, Marco Wilson, and Isaiah Bolden as cornerbacks currently under contract for the Patriots.

5 defensive free agent fits for the Patriots
The New England Patriots are promising to add an impact player in free agency – on defense.
Conventional wisdom dictates that the Patriots should aggressively address the offense on the open market, considering their many needs on that side of the ball. But according to the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed, they’re looking to make room for “at least one elite defender who would start immediately” in free agency.

The market has morphed in recent days. Established high-end players have either hit the market due to cap issues with their teams, or been tagged. And that’s just on defense.

Frankly, it’s a better, deeper market on that side of the ball than it is on offense. The Patriots would inevitably be overpaying someone at wide receiver, while the tackle market is both thin and top-heavy. So, if they intend to spend bigger than usual this off-season, it would be wise to allocate some space to a difference-maker(s) on defense.
