This new report on Jack Jones and the Patriots is not at all surprising
Shocking development for the New England Patriots: cornerback Jack Jones had an attitude problem.
Of course, your sarcasm detector probably just exploded. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Jones, whom the Patriots suspended themselves in his rookie season, ultimately got cut because he gave the coaches too much ‘tude.
That’s according to the Boston Herald’s sweeping exposé into the Patriots’ problems that came out last week from Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed. As part of a section detailing the ways Bill Belichick “tightened on his grip on a program that began to fray on the edges,” they reported on an incident between Jones and cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino during the team’s loss to the Colts in Germany:
“After allowing troubled cornerbacks Jack Jones and J.C. Jackson to play against Washington on Nov. 5, a day they missed curfew at the team hotel, Belichick left Jackson home on the Patriots’ trip to Germany. But in Frankfurt, according to a team source, Jones blew up on position coach Mike Pellegrino at halftime for not starting. … Belichick cut Jones a day later.”
Jones quickly signed with the Las Vegas Raiders after the Patriots moved on from him, and he made an immediate impact with his new team. Jones made two interceptions, both returned for touchdowns, in seven games with the Raiders, and also made four total pass breakups and 25 tackles with one tackle for loss.
In some situations, that may be viewed as a player “making his former team pay,” or the Patriots “making a mistake letting him go.” But it cannot be stressed enough that Jones was arrested for trying to get two loaded guns through security at Logan Airport last June. Despite eventually getting the charges dropped, he should have been cut for that alone.
It’s only a matter of time before Jones gets in more off-field trouble. Or even on-field trouble. The honeymoon phase won’t last forever for him. Jones’ problem has never been his football talent. It’s been the other things.
And the Patriots should have no regrets cutting ties.
