At least one Patriots coach is expected to be gone soon
A reckoning is on the horizon in New England.
We’re at the point that it would be shocking if heads didn’t roll on the Patriots’ coaching staff after the way the 2023 season has gone. And that should extend to some of the players, too, but you can’t fire all 53. The team could, however, clean house among the coaches and start fresh there.
It remains to be seen whether Patriots owner Robert Kraft actually moves on from Bill Belichick, which of course is the big one hanging over it all at Gillette Stadium – but it does sound very likely that at least one assistant coach is on his way out the door: offensive line coach Adrian Klemm.
As part of a detailed, multi-layered report on the Patriots’ disastrous 2023 season by Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed at the Boston Herald, there’s this nugget: “Multiple league sources do not expect Klemm to return, though his deal extends past this season, as does [offensive coordinator Bill] O’Brien’s.” Klemm, who albeit did have to leave the team in November for private health-related reasons, has been at the helm of another rough season for the Patriots offensive line, a unit that ranks 28th in pass-blocking at Pro Football Focus.
So, it certainly would be no surprise if Klemm were shown the door, and if that was part of a larger-scale rebuild on the offensive coaching staff. That’s especially believable in light of some of the details in the Herald story.
For one, Klemm apparently blew up at Patriots Director of Player Personnel Matt Groh, and did it publicly rather than behind closed doors:
Outside the front office, a few staffers privately pointed fingers back at decision-makers about the talent available. That is, save for Klemm, who confronted director of player personnel Matt Groh early in the season in a loud exchange that reverberated through the organization. Klemm, according to sources, didn’t feel heard, while some offensive veterans didn’t want to believe their eyes.
Additionally, O’Brien didn’t seem to be a fan of the assistant coaches under him that he inherited:
The Herald could not confirm whether O’Brien wanted to remake the offensive staff, but O’Brien’s frustration with the wide receivers and offensive line coaches began bubbling as soon as the late spring. Both position groups feature underdeveloped high draft picks and rank among the league’s worst units.
And just throw in this anonymous quote, which ostensibly is directed at least partially at Klemm: “It’s just a lot of bad shit … Bad coaching.”
That speaks more to an overall dysfunction on the 2023 Patriots coaching staff, which turned out to be a mishmash of guys with different philosophies and backgrounds that was destined to go up in flames. Klemm may not be at fault for much more than the offensive line problems, but the reported incident with Groh indicates that the organization isn’t happy with how he’s handled things from a professional standpoint.
So, with or without Belichick, it sounds like Klemm is on his way out the door and the Patriots will be in the market for a new O-line coach. But it’s quite possible they’ll be looking for an entire new staff, if this Herald report is any indication.
