The Philadelphia Eagles are getting the full Matt Patricia experience
The Philadelphia Eagles might want to change their minds on Matt Patricia before it goes from bad to worse.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters Monday that he’s sticking with Patricia as the team’s defensive play-caller, despite the unit continuing to play below their standards since he took over. In fact, one could argue they’ve been even worse under Patricia.
The Eagles have lost four of their last five games, starting with a 42-19 drubbing at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, and have allowed an average of 31 points over that span. In the three games since Patricia took over for fired defensive coordinator Sean Desai, their 26.6 points allowed per game rank 25th in the NFL (h/t The #Eagles defense since Matt Patricia took over as play caller.

In Week 15 against the Seahawks, the Eagles allowed a go-ahead 29-yard touchdown to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with just 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and on a pass from Drew Lock, no less. The Seahawks went on a 10-play, 92-yard drive to wrest the victory away from the Eagles in the closing minutes.
The Eagles managed to beat the New York Giants in Week 16, but because they scored 33 points. The defense allowed 25, including a 69-yard touchdown to Darius Slayton with 5:33 left in the fourth. But the worst came in Week 17, when the Eagles lost to the lowly Arizona Cardinals, allowing 35 points and 449 total yards in the process, including yet another game-losing touchdown in the final minute.
Obviously, the Philly defense was underperforming before the team turned to Patricia. But the former Patriots defensive coordinator certainly hasn’t been close to the spark the group needed.
Some of the Eagles’ defensive mainstays are getting older, for sure. But it’s hard to believe that Fletcher Cox, Darius Slay, Kevin Byard, Brandon Graham, Shaquille Leonard, and James Bradberry all fell off a cliff at the same time. And they still have talented young players like Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Josh Sweat.
Their issues lately, especially under Patricia, have been with poor situational football. That goes back to preparation. That goes back to coaching. Under Patricia, it hasn’t been good enough.
And it’s unlikely it’ll be good enough at any point down the stretch of the 2023 season. So if the Eagles really do stick with Patricia all the way, and it torpedoes a once-promising season with Super Bowl aspirations, that may well be the definition of insanity.
It would be the full Matt Patricia Experience™.
