Zolak & Bertrand: Who makes sense as the next Patriots’ GM?
While discussing the future of the Patriots front office, Zolak & Bertrand dove into candidates who would make sense as the next GM.
I wouldn’t rule out talking to the likes of Dave Ziegler and Jon Robinson…
Marc Bertrand: I don’t have the answer for who the GM should be. If they’re blowing everybody out of here, I know I don’t want Nick Caserio, which Ben Volin wrote about at the start of the week. I’m all set with that.
Hardy: I’m kind of all set with anything that’s already been here. Unless it was somebody who is in like direct opposition to Bill and has it on record of the moves that they wanted to do that Bill vetoed that would have been, in hindsight, great moves. If that person is in the building or has been in the building and can show documentation saying, oh, I was here and I wanted this guy and this guy and this guy and I got overruled on all three. If you can show me some kind of a track record, fine.
Marc Bertrand: (Dave) Ziegler might be that guy, and he’s out of a job now.
Hardy: Otherwise, is there anybody that’s been here or anybody who is here right now that you would feel comfortable in turning things over to?
Marc Bertrand: I think so. I don’t think it’s like a blanket statement that if you ever had anything to do with the front office here, that you’re excluded. I would sort of say there are some guys in there that might be worth taking a look at.
Hardy: Matt Groh?
Marc Bertrand: No, no, no, no, no, no. Not Matt Groh. I don’t know, I’d talk to Jon Robinson. I would talk to Ziegler, I would talk to guys that were here. But I’m not keeping the ones that are currently at the top. So no, Matt Groh is out. Same for Bill. And Nick Caserio, no.
Joe Murray: I like Adam Peters from the 49ers, you know, what he’s doing with that team. I just think that’s a guy that could come in, he’s been a part of that system. Belichick loves that Shanahan offense. He tried to instill it a year ago. I think that’s one guy that that I would take a look at. And then, you know, if you just look at whatever is going on in Philadelphia, somebody from there is probably an option considering the way that they built the team through the draft and in free agency. But it’s got to be somebody from outside the organization guys. If they’re going to move on, I feel like they need completely new blood here.

Patriots leaving one of their cornerbacks behind for trip to Germany

The New England Patriots are going to be without at least one top cornerback on their depth chart when they make the trip to Germany this weekend. And they’re doing it on purpose.
According to #Patriots CB JC Jackson is not expected to travel with the team to Germany for their game against the #Colts, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo. With questions about his reliability, the decision was made to have him stay home, get through the bye and return in a better place. pic.twitter.com/kNdbeI9RLs Patriots CB JC Jackson was late to the team hotel on Saturday, per sources, which was a part of why he started Sunday's game vs. the Commanders on the bench. Now, as @RapSheet said, Jackson won't be making the trip to Germany.
Reliability issues have long plagued Jackson.
Frankly, that added context is not surprising. Jackson notably started last Sunday’s loss to the Washington Commanders on the sideline, before ultimately playing 53 snaps (68 percent), third-most among Patriots cornerbacks.

The loss to Washington marked the second straight rough Sunday for Jackson, for a number of reasons. He allowed a passer rating of 131.5 in Week 8 against the Dolphins, dinged for five catches, 94 yards, and two touchdowns (via Pro Football Focus). His opposing passer rating against the Commanders was 77.1 with no TDs allowed, but it’s now clear that confidence in Jackson has waned in recent weeks.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick denied that he deliberately benched Jackson and Jack Jones to begin Sunday’s game. “Everybody played. They all played,” Belichick said when pressed on the matter. Jones drew added attention to himself after the game, when he left the building without speaking to the media then spoke his mind on Twitter.
Clearly, the Patriots have more trust in Shaun Wade, who started against the Commanders, to play his best football against the Colts in Germany, than they do in Jackson.
Wade Earns His Role?

Jackson and Jones have dominated the narrative surrounding the Patriots’ cornerback room in recent weeks, and for good reason, because they are the team’s most talented outside guys. But Patriots cornerback coach Mike Pellegrino would like us to focus more on Wade’s rise to starter.
It’s not a totally unfair stance. Wade was not targeted in his 13 snaps last Sunday, earning a solid 69.1 coverage grade from PFF.
“I feel like the narrative’s a little messed up, like, ‘What did Shaun do to really earn that?'” Pellegrino said. “Everyone’s trying to make it about [Jackson and Jones], but it’s really ‘What did Shaun really do to earn that right?’ And Shaun had a great week of practice and Shaun played really well and Shaun did his job.
“I think the narrative should be more pushed towards, ‘What did Shaun do right to earn that opportunity?’ Because Shaun has done a lot of great things here for us in this past year, and is a different player than what he has been in the past. So, my hat’s off to Shaun. He did all the right things, and he got what he deserved.”

Wade probably is more dependable than Jackson at the moment. Pellegrino just has to accept that the reality is the media will focus more on the more talented player having issues than the improved performance of a player (Wade) who has struggled to crack the lineup at all since coming to New England in 2021. But Pellegrino was asked about Jackson and Jones for a third time during his Tuesday presser, so he felt the need to pump up Wade, which is fair.
Perhaps Wade really is improved and ready to become a regular contributor. Looks like we’ll find out in Germany, and possibly beyond that.
