Patriots get three players at three key positions back at practice
For the second week in a row, the Patriots held a walkthrough practice on Tuesday this week. The team typically practices for the first time each week on Wednesday, but has now added this Tuesday practice since Bill Belichick’s emphasis on ‘starting over’ began.
This Tuesday’s practice was held without a number of key players on the field. At the same time, the team got the return of three players at positions of need – wide receiver Demario Douglas, cornerback Jack Jones, and tackle Conor McDermott .

Douglas missed all of last week after suffering a concussion in the Patriots’ loss to the New Orleans Saints two weeks ago. Getting Douglas back should be a boost to the Patriots’ offense. Despite playing just 24 percent of the offensive snaps this year, the rookie is second among the team’s wide receivers with 143 yards this year.
Jones has yet to play this season after suffering a hamstring injury in practice leading up to the season opener. That injury landed Jones on IR. His return to practice means the team now has a 21-day window to add him to the active roster. The Patriots’ cornerback depth has been tested significantly in recent weeks due to injury, and Jones’ return will give the Patriots some needed help on the boundary.
As for McDermott his return is unexpected. He was signed midway through last season and was the Patriots’ starting right tackle to close the year. This summer he competed for that starting job, but got hurt in camp and ended up on IR with an undisclosed injury.
The Patriots released McDermott off IR in early September with an injury settlement. Apparently healthy, he’s now back, with MassLive’s Mark Daniels reporting he’s been signed to the practice squad (the Patriots had an open practice squad spot after Malik Cunningham’s elevation this weekend). Given the Patriots’ recent struggles at right tackle, it wouldn’t be surprising if McDermott works his way back into the lineup.
Meanwhile, the Patriots were without eight projected starters on Tuesday. Of those eight, JuJu Smith-Schuster is the only one who was out last week, coming off suffering a concussion against the Saints. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson, defensive lineman Keion White and linebacker Josh Uche were all not on the field after getting injured in the Raiders game. Tight end Hunter Henry, tackle Trent Brown, defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, and cornerback Jonathan Jones also weren’t spotted. There will be more clarity on all eight of those players on Wednesday afternoon, when the team releases its first injury report of the week.
