Report: Patriots sign free agent center Darryl Williams
The Patriots continue to add depth as they prepare for training camp. On Friday, the team reportedly signed center Darryl Williams, as first reported by Jordan Schultz.
Not to be confused with former Chiefs and current Cardinals running back Darrel Williams, or long-time Panthers and Buffalo Bills starting right tackle Daryl Williams, this Darryl Williams entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs in 2020. He was with Kansas City’s practice squad each of the last two seasons, and was released by the team following spring practices earlier this week.
Williams played his college ball at Mississippi State, where he was a three-year starter, seeing time at both center and left guard. He was also voted a team captain for his senior season in 2019.
Now in New England, Williams will have a chance to compete for a depth role or practice squad spot. Starting center David Andrews returns for the second-year of a four-year contract. First-round pick Cole Strange is penciled in as the left guard. Michael Onwenu is expected to take over for Shaq Mason – who was traded this offseason – at right guard after primarily playing tackle his first two seasons.
Other depth interior offensive linemen on the roster include Drew Desjarlais, Arlington Hambright, William Sherman, and rookies Chasen Hines and Kody Russey.
By signing Williams, the Patriots now have 87 players on their 90-man roster. He’s the second player the team has signed this week, after wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.
