Looks like Bruins will let Jake DeBrusk walk
On Friday’s Felger & Mazz program, Mike gives his thoughts on Jake DeBrusk and the Boston Bruins’ upcoming free agency period.
Bruins Moving on from DeBrusk?
Parts of conversation abbreviated for clarity.
Mike Felger: I’m not as down on the Bruins as many people are. I’m not as down on Don Sweeney as many people are. I don’t think he’s great, but I think he’s OK.
My biggest beef is hanging on to guys. And, not making harder decisions on your roster. And maybe, that’s about to change a little bit because it feels like Jake DeBrusk is on the way out. I think in the past or at other times they might have kept that guy. But this time around they’re not going to. Isn’t Jake DeBrusk like the quintessential good-but-not-good-enough Bruin?
Jim Murray: Yes, I think he’s the poster boy for that. And he’s been a bit of a pain in the ass too. So adios, I’m ready to move on from Jake DeBrusk.
Felger: I mean, he’s the kind of guy that gives you a high floor. He’s going to help you win regular season games. He’s going to help you make the playoffs. But there’s nothing really special there.
From a competitive standpoint, he’s tough in the playoffs and big along the boards. He’ll grind you down. It’s not even about the hot and cold production, which most players go through.
So, okay, they’re going to walk away from DeBrusk. I take that as a good sign. They’re going to go after Brady Skjei. I liked Skjei in Carolina. He’s part of that group in Carolina that gave you such trouble. He’s a bigger, left-shot defenseman, kills penalties, and can do many things.
But you’ll have Brady Skjei at the projected 7 years, $52 million? My math might be bad, but that contract will be between $7 and $8 million, per year.
Lohrei, we all sort of like, right? I mean, that’s a pretty good 1-2-3 on the left-defensive side. But is Hampus Lindholm worth it at that point? Would the team be willing to move on from Lindholm?
Would you consider a big hockey trade with someone like McAvoy? I’d highly, highly doubt it. They just did that sort of thing with the goalie. They swapped one guy for the next to only save themselves a couple million bucks.
I’m just as interested in what’s on the way out as what’s on the way in.
