Patriots waive rookie linebacker prior to start of training camp
The New England Patriots waived linebacker Jontrey Hunter prior to the start of training camp later this week.
Just two days out from training camp, the New England Patriots have opened up a spot on their roster. It comes with the teams parting ways with a member of their rookie class.
On Monday afternoon, the Patriots announced the release of linebacker Jontrey Hunter. This move comes after Hunter was placed on the non-football injury (NFI) list late last week when rookies reported to the facility for the start of camp.

No reason was given at the time for Hunter being placed on NFI. He would not have been eligible to practice without first being activated by the team.
Hunter was signed by the Patriots as a UDFA out of Georgia State back in the spring. He was the only Patriots’ UDFA to have participated in the NFL Combine, but would likely have needed to carve out a special teams role to make the spring this summer.
With Hunter being released, the Patriots now have an open spot on their 90-man roster. In the past the team has gone into camp with a spot or two open to have room to add players as need be later on in the summer, so it’s very possible the spot doesn’t get filled by the first practice on Wednesday.
