2024 Boston Red Sox Expectations
It’s Opening Day for Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox are in Seattle for it. On the daily Felger and Massarotti e-mail chain some questions were asked about the Red Sox and the coming 2024 baseball season and I thought I’d offer a written public response to them.
What should we reasonably expect from this team?
The Red Sox win range should be between 78 and 86 – I lean towards the 78 because I bet under 79 ½ but if the defense is better, Tom Werner thinks that is worth 8 wins. 86 wins should keep the Red Sox playing meaningful games in September. At least one person with the Red Sox that I’ve talked to thinks they’ll win 90 games this season. I don’t see it but if they do, more power to them.
For the sake of the conversation, here’s my path to 90 wins. It starts with the starting rotation, Bello, Pivetta, Crawford, Whitlock and Houck have to make 25-30 starts and more than half MUST be quality starts and for the season having ERAs around or less than 4.00. Triston Casas has to be getting MVP votes, Devers has to have another 30 / 100 season, Trevor Story has to be playing 140 games being able to hit in the three hole between Devers and Casas with a batting average line closer to his time in Colorado .272 BA / .863 OPS / 26 HR / 75 RBI / 17 SB than his Boston average line .227 BA / .685 OPS / 10 HR / 40 RBI / 12 SB. The outfield of Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreau, and Jarren Duran have to all stay healthy, catch the baseball like they can and take a step forward in their offensive development. Also, let’s see the 2021 Tyler O’Neill at the plate.
Who are the most interesting players on the team?
The two most interesting and important players on the Red Sox in 2024 are Triston Casas and Brayan Bello. Let’s start with Casas. Casas should get MVP votes. On paper, Triston Casas is already better than Vladimir Guerrero Jr. after his second season.
VGJ: 183 Games – .269 BA / .778 OPS / 24 HR / 102 RBI
Casas: 159 Games – .253 BA / .842 OPS / 29 HR / 78 RBI
In Guerrero’s third season he led the MLB in runs scored, home runs, OBP, Slugging %, OPS, and total bases. He finished second in MVP voting. That’s what I’m expecting from Casas this season.
Brayan Bello is getting the opening day start after signing his contract extension. He’s been working with Pedro and his hype is through the roof. He better get CY Young votes in this his third season in MLB.
The Red Sox need the Bello of his first 22 starts in 2023:
10-7 / 126 IP / 50 ER / 34 BB / 104 K / 17 HR / 3.56 ERA / ,261 BA
Bello’s last 6 starts vs Hou, at TB, Bal, Tor, Tex, TB:
2-4 / 30 2/3 IP / 37 H / 24 ER / 11 BB / 28 K / 7 HR / 7.04 ERA / .306 BA
While not a roster player, the manager is in the clubhouse and is part of the uniformed personnel. Alex Cora is an interesting subject as he’s in the last year of his contract and has seemingly has changed the vibe in the locker room during spring training and Craig Breslow hasn’t talked to him about a contract extension. Sam Kennedy has said publicly that it’s Breslow’s decision to hire or fire the manager. Off the record, people seem to think Cora doesn’t want to be here if the team is set up like this. On the record, Cora keeps talking about how he loves it here. My vibe is that Cora wants to be here if the Red Sox are serious about doing whatever it takes to win championships. If the Red Sox are just about being a business, then he’ll be the manager of the LA Dodgers next season when Dave Roberts fails.
2024 Team Predictions:
– Record: 78-84
– Team MVP: Triston Casas
– Team Most Improved: Garrett Whitlock
– Team Biggest Disappointment: Trevor Story
– Biggest Wild Card to team success: Wilyer Abreu
