Patriots meet with top tackles at NFL Combine
Tackle is arguably the biggest need for the New England Patriots this offseason. Last season the Patriots had revolving doors at both tackle spots, at times using players that looked overmatched against NFL talent. Those who did hold their own – mainly Mike Onwenu and Trent Brown – are now pending free agents. There’s a chance the entire room could be in for a major reset this spring.
That has some wondering if the Patriots could use the third overall pick (or a slight trade down) to address the need at the top of the draft. At the Senior Bowl last month, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that the Patriots would “give a long, hard look at drafting a left tackle with the No. 3 pick” under Eliot Wolf.

The Patriots seem to be at least doing their due diligence in that regard. On Saturday, Evan Lazar of Patriots.com reported that the Patriots have met with both Joe Alt of Notre Dame and Olu Fashanu of Penn State. The two top tackles in this year’s class, both are projected to go in the top 10.
Despite having just turned 21, Alt already stands 6-foot-8, 315 pounds and has over 30 career starts at left tackle under his belt. His game is very polished for being as young as he is, and he projects as a plug-and-play starting left tackle in the NFL. For more on Alt, you can check out our full scouting report here.
Fashanu has impressive size as well at 6-foot-6, 320 pounds, with just over 20 starts at the college level at left tackle. He’s a bit more of an upside player, with his athleticism giving him a high ceiling.
If the Patriots want to land either player they could potentially trade down, but likely not by much. There are some teams very much in need of tackles just behind the Patriots in the draft order, like the Titans (7th) and Jets (10th). There’s also always the treat of teams moving up.
The Patriots have met with a few other tackles projected to go further down the board. Here’s a full list of their pre-draft meetings that have been reported so far…
2024 Patriots pre-draft meeting tracker
Throughout the pre-draft process, NFL teams meet with prospects sometimes on multiple occasions. These meets can occur at showcase games like the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl, the NFL Combine, can be organized officially (top-30 visits), or be arranged in a number of other ways.
While these meetings aren’t always a perfect indication of who a team will draft, they often provide a general guide of the kinds of players a team is considering drafting. Tracking meetings can also come to fruition later on when a draft class hits free agency.
Last year the Patriots only had an official pre-draft meeting with one of their draft picks (Christian Gonzalez) and signed another as a UDFA (Malik Cunningham). In 2022 they met with two draft picks (Jack Jones and Marcus Jones) and another UDFA (D’Eriq King). Make of that what you will – the more pessimistic fans can use meetings as a guide to players the Patriots won’t be drafting.
Who have the Patriots met with in 2024? Here’s a running list. Be sure to check back throughout the offseason as the list is updated.
This list doesn’t include the players who were at the Patriots’ local pro day. That group can be found here.
