This new detail proves just how broken Mac Jones really is
We all know Mac Jones is a broken quarterback. It was on full display most of the time that the Patriots’ former starting signal-caller took the field. But this new detail from an exposé in the Boston Herald takes it to another level.
It was obvious to anyone who watched the 2023 Patriots closely that Jones at times panicked on the field, whether before a play or during it. That led to ugly turnovers and sometimes baffling on-field decision-making, and ultimately one of the worst quarterback performances New England has ever witnessed.
And decision-making is supposed to be one of Jones’ strengths, an equalizer for his relative lack of physical talent. But it’s clear that, based on this passage from Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed in the Herald, Jones’ brain was as broken as anything else:
Under O’Brien’s tutelage, Jones fell from completing a career-high 35 passes in the season opener to getting benched in four of his 11 remaining games. Teammates recognized his confidence was shot when panic became a habit, and he would audible to a new [play] but decline to throw to the play’s intended target.
It’s one thing to audible. It’s another thing to audible into the wrong play. But to audible into a new play, then decide not to try to execute said play in real-time? That is quarterback dysfunction of the highest order. A major malfunction.
Considering how it often looked with Jones at quarterback, it’s not terribly surprising that he was that broken. But it’s not always readily apparent whether a quarterback is making the right decision or throwing to the intended target on a given play – let alone changing the play and not throwing to the right target. It underlines how bad it’s gotten for Jones in New England, where he’s worked with three different offensive coordinators and a lack of talent around him.
One “locker-room source” reportedly told the Herald: “We had no chance to win with Mac at quarterback.”
The story also paints a picture of a dysfunctional quarterback room. That’s not surprising, either, because none of them have played particularly well and there was a revolving door at the third-string spot. Jones and Bailey Zappe are described as a pair who “hardly talk” and “are often siloed in their own preparation,” rather than supporting each other in any way.
But the piece about Jones’ unfathomable level of indecision on the field is what really stands out about him in this report. And it’s not totally his fault, as evidenced by the chaos around him on the roster and coaching staff, and in the front office. But when you single-handedly screw things up on the field to the level that Jones did, it’s hard to keep your job.
And this latest report is a sign that Jones is going to need a fresh start after three harrowing seasons to start his career.
