Felger & Mazz: Was Brad Marchand’s trip on Timothy Liljegren intentional?
Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand has once again found himself in the middle of another controversy over a potential dirty play. In Thursday nights win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marchand and Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren got tied up along the boards which led to a potential trip by Marchand on Liljegren. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, the guys gave their thoughts on the play.

Was it a dirty play by Brad Marchand?
Mazz: Looking at it, I don’t think Marchand did it on purpose. But the fact that we have to talk about it is Marchand’s fault and no one else’s because he has the reputation of being a dirty, slimy, cheating kind of weasel, so you have to wonder, did he do it on purpose? And as a result, did he try to hurt the guy? My gut tells me no. Looking at the replay. But again, it was absolutely a penalty.
Jim Murray: Yeah, it’s worth talking about because of who the player is. Like you said, Mazz, given the history it’s going to be more discussed than it probably should be. If it was any other player in the team you’d probably just shrug at it and say, “No big deal”. But I don’t know, just again, I’m bringing it up now, looking at it like five times over again, I don’t think in the grand scheme of things it’s that dirty of a play. I really don’t.

Felger: So I’ve settled on that I do. I do. What am I going to trust this guy? I’m going to give this guy the benefit of the doubt? So I think he knew what he was doing. It was super subtle, which he has to be now because, you know….
Jim Murray: The captaincy and all that.
Felger: Yeah, there’s that. And then there’s just, you know, he has such a prior track record that whatever suspension he gets is going to be doubled. He’ll get extra hard treatment because he’s the most fined and suspended player in NHL history. That’s why. So anything he does has to be real subtle. And this one was real subtle. So that’s what I think. No one knows. I mean, it’s so close that you just don’t know. So Mazz you say your gut tells you he didn’t mean to? My gut tells me he did. But, you know, it’s close. It’s certainly close.
