Would you rather be the Patriots or Giants?
The Patriots and Giants have a long history with each other. With both teams off to 1-3 starts, which team would you rather be right now?
The Giants hired a new coach and made the playoffs last year. They gave an extension to Daniel Jones and paid running back Saquon Barkley. The offensive line gave up 11 sacks on Monday night football. They now face back to back road games at Miami and Buffalo.
The Patriots got embarrassed by the Cowboys 38-3 on Sunday. Mac Jones got benched for his awful performance. Bill Belichick is under fire for personnel moves. In addition, they lost two key defenders in Matthew Judon & Christian Gonzalez. They also brought in Bill O’Brien to fix their offense from a season ago, it got worse. The Patriots have a softer with the Saints and Raiders back to back.
The Giants invested in the quarterback position, while the Patriots have more questions under center. The team has an option on Mac Jones next season. With the struggles of Daniel Jones, a long term deal doesn’t look great.
Brian Daboll is from the Belichick tree and was named NFL coach of the year in 2022. Bill Belichick has a record under .500 without Tom Brady and is 9-12 dating back to last season. The difference in the two teams is the investment the Giants have put into the team, and it doesn’t look good after four weeks. The Patriots’ struggles are personnel moves. They had a chance to invest in free agents and chose not to.
Looking at the division, the Eagles and Cowboys lead the way in the NFC East, the Bills and Dolphins are ahead of the Patriots in the AFC east. Both teams are not competing for the playoffs. I could make the case for the Giants to be the better situation, but they are stuck with their QB. The Patriots may clean house if they do not turn it around.
The Giants have beat the Patriots twice in Super Bowls, but the direction of both organizations right has both teams looking back at what once was.
