More changes to Patriots’ wide receiver depth chart with latest release

Tuesday saw the Patriots make their first roster moves since training camp started last week. The team placed wide receiver Jalen Hurd on the reserve/retired list and signed wide receiver Thyrick Pitts to take his place.
On Wednesday, the roster saw another change at wide receiver. As first reported by Sam Knox of WPRI 12 in Providence, the Patriots have waived wide receiver Ed Lee. This comes after Lee appeared to suffer an injury during Tuesday’s practice.

Lee signed with the Patriots as a UDFA just before OTAs after being with the team during rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. The former URI star was among a handful of receivers expected to compete for a spot on the Patriots’ practice squad when the season started.
Without Lee, the Patriots still have plenty of depth at wide receiver. They have nine players currently on the roster at the position, not including Matthew Slater. The depth group behind the projected roster locks of Kendrick Bourne, DeVante Parker, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and Tyquan Thornton is Pitts, Tre Nixon, Raleigh Webb, and rookies Kayshon Boutte and Demario Douglas.
So far, the Patriots have not announced any corresponding roster move to Lee’s release. The move does open up a spot on their 90-man roster, which now sits at 89 players.
The Patriots will be back on the practice fields on Thursday for their eighth training camp practice. We’ll see if any new players are on the field with the team then to take over that roster spot.

Patriots training camp notebook: Quarterbacks and rookies highlight Day 7
After a day out of pads on Tuesday, the New England Patriots returned to the field on Wednesday for what was their most intense training camp practice of the summer to this point. Back in full pads the practice schedule included a little bit of everything, with the team working on the passing game as well as the running game, with both goal line and full field periods.
In a practice that certainly seems to be geared more towards ‘evaluation’ than ‘installation’ the steady progress the offense has made through the first week of camp. That was highlighted by the play of the quarterbacks, who will get us started as we take a closer look at Day 7…
Quarterbacks heating up

This was the second padded practice of the summer, but the first one on Monday focused heavily on the run game. That made Wednesday’s passing sessions the most competitive of the summer so far, and all three quarterbacks thrived.
Mac Jones was 13-of-15 in competitive drills. Moreso in this practice than any other he tested tight windows and more intermediate and deep routes.
One standout moment from Jones came early in practice in 11-on-11 full field work. Pressured by Jahlani Tavai, Jones rolled out to his right. Throwing on the run, he connected with rookie wide receiver Kayshon Boutte for a first down.
Jones then made some of his best throws late in practice, connecting for touchdowns with DeVante Parker and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Those two reps in particular stand out because they were on timing concepts (a back-shoulder for Parker, and a quick-hitting in route for Smith-Schuster). Timing means chemistry and to see Jones show that level of chemistry with his top receivers – especially Smith-Schuster, who he’s been on the field with only a handful of times – is encouraging.
