Patriots’ free-agent pool shrinks after NFL franchise tag window passes
The franchise tag window has passed in the NFL, and a few notable names have come off the projected open market.
Free agency is set to begin March 17, but Tuesday marked the deadline for teams to decide whether to place the franchise tag on a player from their rosters. As was previously expected to happen, the Patriots did not use the tag on cornerback J.C. Jackson, making the 26-year-old one of the most coveted impending unrestricted free agents.
However, eight players across the NFL did receive the franchise tag. None of them seemed like particularly likely targets for the Patriots in free agency, but there were certainly a number of high-end talents taken off the board for every team looking to spend. Here’s the full rundown of players who were tagged on Tuesday…
Godwin was particularly interesting, because the Bucs decided to take the rare step of franchising him for a second straight year. His number was less than that of Adams, who was franchised for the first time based on the new 2022 figures.
With Adams and Godwin now off the market in free agency, Jackson becomes arguably the best player available. If the Patriots are operating as they have in the past with other internal free agents, which is to let him explore and come back to them for a chance to match his best offer, then the odds seem low of Jackson returning to New England.
The Patriots still have work to do in order to improve their defense and possibly add at wide receiver. But their chances of signing someone at or near the top of the market decreased on franchise tag day.
