Jaylen Brown surprised by Eastern Conference Finals MVP win
Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was surprised by his Eastern Conference Finals MVP win, which he earned by a narrow margin.
Throughout the Eastern Conference Finals, it never felt like there was a clear favorite to win the series MVP award. The Boston Celtics got key contributions from multiple players on their way to a sweep.
When the award was decided on following the Celtics’ Game 4 win on Monday night, the voting reflected that. In the end it was a 5-4 margin that decided the winner of the Larry Bird Trophy, with Jaylen Brown narrowly beating 2022 winner Jayson Tatum.
For Brown, the recognition came as a surprise.
“I wasn’t expecting that at all. I don’t ever win s–t,” Brown said after the game. “So, I was just happy that we won.”
In the put-away game on Monday night, Brown scored a game-high 29 points on 11-of-22 shooting, including a 4-of-8 mark from deep. He also grabbed six rebounds, and picked up three steals.
For the series, Brown averaged 29.8 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals per game. In addition to the raw numbers themselves Brown was a part of key moments for the Celtics in this series – he hit the game-tying shot in the final seconds to force overtime in Game 1, then led the Celtics with a 40-point performance in Game 2.
It was a well-rounded approach from Brown, who was asked after the game if he felt this series will help fans see him as more than just a scorer.
“I think I’m one of the best two-way wings, guards, whatever you want to say, in his game,” Brown said postgame. “I thought this year I’ve taken a level and I’ve increased it. I took the matchup, I picked up guys full-court, I chased guys off screens, I battled with bigs, and I felt like I should have been All-Defensive. And that probably hurt me the most, because that’s one of the things that I set out in the season that I wanted to be.”
“I like to set my hat on just being a versatile two-way wing, and can do both at any point in time,” Brown added. “The last kind of four minutes of this game – you saw that.”
This is the third year the NBA has awarded MVPs for the conference final series, and now the Celtics have won two of the three awards named after franchise legend Larry Bird. Brown’s win follows Tatum’s in 2022. Jimmy Butler of the Miami Heat won last year.
